I'll most likely be moving here for about 5 months or so. Family will be coming out for the summer, so I'd like to know what the better areas are for them, since I'll liky be working long hours, while they're in town. Kids are 14, 12 and 2...so I'd like to have the peace of mind knowing that they're in a good area while I'm at work.
TIA

I'm about 4 hours from you. Planning a trip through there in the coming months.

Have you ever been there before, or will that be your first visit?

First visit. Just moved out here myself. Think there may be a poster or two who lived out that way. I'll see if I can remember their names.

What kind of jobs are there in Carlsbad, NM?
I have a growing interest in maybe moving to NM.

The wife and I lived there for a year about 16 years ago. Great town, great people!
It was the nicest, friendliest town I have ever been to. Town is about 25% Anglo, 25% Mexican ( they prefer Mexican to Hispanic) and 50% mixed between the two. Blond Garcias and brown Smiths. We lived in an apartment and worked in the schools. We seriously considered moving there permanently but in the end it was just to far away from our family.

Good for you landing a job out there, the whole area has been hit pretty hard. I can't really add much as I've only been there for day or two trips but it seemed a lot better than Hobbs. I think it's relatively close to the really sweet parts of NM too so there should be some good places to travel to if you get a chance

My roommate is a geologist who just moved from there. Says it is the biggest shithole he has ever lived in. He's a pretty positive dude so I believe him.

I'm in outside sales and cover Carlsbad, Artesia, Hobbs areas. Carlsbad is an okay town. The infrastructure is overburdened due to the influx of people. The housing is expensive. Not knowing what your living arrangements are or if that is what you need help with?
Eating places are limited but doable. Healthcare is ok but available. Anything major and a person will be transferred to El Paso or Lubbock. Caves are a blast and plenty of hiking. El Paso shopping is about 2-3 hours away. Artesia is a smaller town with even less to do but their hotels aren't as expensive. Only about 30-40 min from Carlsbad.
I just stayed in a Hampton in Carlsbad for 300.00 per night. Always possible to sign the kids up for a summer sport. Walmart and a Albertsons for groceries. Lowes is there. There is a dam and water activities available close by. It is small town living with about 50 thousand plus living there.
Ask any other questions that you would like answered.

Just went here for a night on our way to Arizona. We didn't wander off of the main drag, but it seemed kind of chaotic. Had to go next door to Walmart for some road snacks, and it seemed that the ratio of people in the store to cars in the lot were at least 4:1. A lot of people walking around outside. We walked in on the hotel clerk making out with her boyfriend behind the desk. Interesting place.
The Caverns are awesome.

My company is opening up a shop there and asking one of our employees to go and live there. He said yes, I feel bad for him

$300 a night...you're joking, right ?

No joke. It will get closer to 350-400 during summer and spring breaks. Fairfield inn a POS hotel IMO is a little less. I stay in the nicer ones hoping to avoid bed bug issues.

I'll only be there for 5-7 months. My biggest concern is finding an area to live in, that is safe and offers the kids plenty of activities. They'll only be there for the summer and I'll likely be working long hours at that point. I just wa t to make sure they have a good time while they're there.
