Anybody been down there? I'm going for two weeks in August near San Juan Del Sur. We're mainly just going to surf, but I'd like to get on some roosterfish while I'm there. Never caught one.

TIA.

I went to Costa Rica about 80 miles south of there and did a fishing trip. It was awesome. Just me and three costa ricans that spoke almost no english. Drank about 12 Imperials and caught 4 tuna and 1 rooster. The coolest part is like 500 yards off the beach, your in like 100+ feet of water in some spots. One of the most fun fishing trips I have been on.

I booked a charter out of San Juan del Sur before. I don't remember the name. SJDS is still a fairly small place, I would go to Ricardo's or Pelican Eyes Resort and ask for charter recommendations if you aren't worries about setting it up before you get there. And while you're down there, check on the sailing trip at Pelican Eyes, it's well worth your time and you can troll off the sailboat for the entire trip.

Four hour trip if I recall correctly. We hooked 4-5 roosterfish and managed to land 2. Fishing in a trough about 50 yards or less from the beach while the tide was coming in.

Live bait? I could do that on a paddleboard.

It would be hard as hell to pull up the rooster I caught on a paddle board.

That would be some fun though.

The GoPro video of getting drug around the pacific on a SUP by a bigass rooster fish would be epic.

This is true. I caught my rooster last. The four tuna I caught were decent sized but not real big. When the rooster took the line, the captain looked at me and said "rooster, get ready" in very broken up english. Wore my arse out after 25 minutes or so.

Cut bait IIRC. You should feel the same way about landing a roosterfish on a paddle board that you feel about landing an amberjack.

Thanks. I may give that a shot instead of paying for a charter. I have access to SUPs and kayaks down there and that would be nuts.

I love SJDS. There are numerous charters available, mostly trolling or fishing around the rocky coastline for roosterfish, snapper and tuna. I would not book thru Pelican Eyes, as that would just add a middle man and jack up the price. Maybe walk down to the dock and talk to some folks. We went with a younger guy in a center console, and had a great time. Can't rem his name.

The sailboat tour by Pelican Eyes is really nice. Pricey, but nice. Also going up and down the coast to more secluded beaches like Madera and La Flor are very nice.

Trying to reel in a fish that size on a SUP sounds like a great way to either lose your gear or drown. You damn sure shouldn't belt up. Stick to the yak.
