Keep in mind a. 38 has a 12 lb trigger pull. A lot for most women.

Surprised no one linked my channel.
Watch these two videos WITH her and come back here:

And I cannot say this enough... LET HER CHOOSE HER OWN GUN.

My wife said she wanted a "pretty" gun. I feared she was referring to a pink gut gun.
She pointed out a GP100 in the store as the "pretty" gun she was thinking of.
I'm a big fan of revolvers for people who aren't regular shooters.

I have this with the trigger redone by gallowayprecision. My wife hates to shoot it because of the recoil. She CC's a Ruger sr22.

.38 with a trigger job to lighten the pull. Easy to use in a sticky situation and no limp wrist possibility.

If you like compact, the Shield has a safety option.
I have one, and my S/O loves it.
I'll be trying to get her one of her own soon, as she'll be traveling into and out of downtown Houston everyday for school soon (and potentially living on her own down there next year).
Although, if she's not going to be carrying it everyday, I like that the M&P9c has a rail for a flashlight.
That would really be my only other consideration for the situation you mentioned above and for my S/O...

My S/O likes "pretty" too, but she has an affinity for weird femine shades of blue, rather than pink, which I guess is a fairly decent compromise

Which is why all of these subcompact/compact suggestions should be taken with a grain of salt. No doubt they are very nice firearms, but if they are being used for anything other than CC, they are not being used for their specific intent. For a woman, especially one that has not shot much, a manageable recoil is the key. A full-sized gun will always be better in nearly every situation unless it is being concealed. The mention of the S.A. Range Office 1911 9mm was a great suggestion when you want to talk about managed recoil, except I wouldnt be able to get past the lack of firepower when comparing round capacity of the 1911 (9 rds standard mags) vs let's say a Glock 17 (17 rds standard mags).

did anyone say shotgun yet? Lots more coverage than a pistol, and if you get a chick size, one of your kids can use it for hunting too.

yeah, that's matrimony. Best to just dump her now before she demands half your law firm in the partition action.

First question to answer: will the gun be solely for home defense or will she also be using it for concealed carry? The best advice will vary depending on the intended use.
Assuming it's for home defense only, the following is solid advice.
And yes, a shotgun is the single best home defense gun. A carbine chambered in a handgun caliber is also a good, but frequently forgotten, option, as well.

To quote Travolta's character in Pulp Fiction, "We need shotguns for this kinda shite"
The best home defense weapon is a shotgun. In the case she will ever need it, and I pray that she doesn't, it will give her a large shooting area. Think spray and pray, but if y'all are settled on a handgun, I would recommend the Beretta PX4 strom compact. My wife got me the standard size for Christmas. She loved shooting it so much in terms of comfort, reliability, accuracy, and feel that I got her the compact for her Birthday in January. She has the S&W Bodyguard for her purse, but prefers shooting the Berreta.
