I'm in the process of buying a bass boat, I'm not real familiar with fish finders. For the casual non-tournament fisherman what is a good unit to look at? Mainly fish Lake Verret, but will probably fish Bayou Black, Des Allemands, Spillway, and Blind River, with trips to some deeper reservoirs like Toledo and Ohkissa

I want GPS for sure, but after that depth and water temp are the only things I really know to look at... I would like to learn how to use the other features though. Anything I should know to look for?

Lowrance units, like the HDS series, and combined with satellite chips, have the best mapping on the market for south Louisiana.

Elite 7 HDI or Elite 5 HDI would be the best unit for you, depending on which screen size you like best.

HDI gives you GPS plus everything else along with down scan. You dont have to spend the extra on the HDS with side scan.

I used mine for the first time and i would defiantely go with the 7. its nice having the gps and depthfinder on the screen at the same time and being able to see. the HDI feature is nice and had really good detail. for 450$ it has exceeded my expectations. Lowrance > all others

ETA.. i saltwater fish so the scan feature and side scan isnt a big deal to me, more the GPS mapping and just to read the depth.

Chirp is just more advanced sonar, better clarity, the gold version uses chirp and has high def mapping. I would just go with the chirp.

that and the processor is faster i believe, i have the hdi and does what i need it do. i use the hdi sonar which has a great picture. the chirp is about 700 for the 7 and the hdi is last years model and is 450. either are good units. I love my hdi 7 as i finally used it this past weekend. The satellite maps are awesome.

Thanks, maybe it was because I was looking at it at 3 in the morning but trying to compare a Lowrance to Humminbird feature for feature was making me feel like an old person learning how to Internet.

And that same process worked for Elite 7 HDI?

Decide what the absolute biggest screen you would need and get the next size bigger. Once you get familiar with the features you're gonna want to split and even quadruple the screen sometimes especially in places like Toledo Bend and Ohkissa.

Ok, so dual HDS 12 on the console and dual HDS 9 on the bow like Skeet Reese... May look funny on a 95 Champion, but I'll let the wife know.

What separates the elite 7 from the HDS 7 touch? I need to buy one for my skiff, I'm tired of using the hand held.

The elites are a basic unit with less features, the hds have a touch model and offer way more features, and the hds units are way more $$$$
