References on a resume or not?

Should you put your references on you resume or not? I've narrowed it down to 1 page, sticking to just the important stuff, but the references make it run onto page 2.
Thinking about putting "References Upon Request" or something like that.
Thoughts?

I normally put them on a resume.

put them on there, then the prospective employer may or may not contact them, but it shows you've got nothing to hide

I don't include them. I think it's assumed I can provide if asked, kind of like academic information or a writing sample if you're not that far out of school.
In law, for what it's worth.

Wouldn't bother. They'll ask you for them if/when they need them.

Usually a "references upon request" at the bottom of the page and an attached sheet with said references will suffice.

Thing is, its a position with my current company. I have both outside and inside references. Should I just put the outside ones?
Also, how many references is a good amount? 2?

If you can't shrink your resume two lines, you've got problems

when i hire people, i'm not concerned about their references, per se... after all, it's not like the applicant is putting someone on there that won't give them a glowing review anyway....
i'm more concerned with education, employment history, and availability.... i really get leery when i see gaps in employment and/or "job hopping"... that sends up some red flags, IMO...

I've put "references available upon request" during my latest job hunt. It worked out because I had a good time frame of when they'd be calling after they asked and I could tell the guys I listed to expect a call and they actually answered the phone instead of ignoring the unknown number.

I can but it starts to seem crowded. I really don't feel like starting from scratch with the formatting

This makes sense, especially since my references are always super busy.

ok, I have done a similar thing, since I already had a file with the company they only wanted a brief synopsis of what I'd done while with the company, a paperwork drill but it was just filling squares

In my position, it says:
References are considered confidential but are available upon request from all previous employers.
I don't want every Tom, Dick, and Harry (actually Tarneisha, Shequanna, and Britannia) calling all of my references.
