It depends on 3 factors, imo:
1. Where is your job?
2. Do you have kids?
3. How much money do you have?

I will live on whichever shore has my job.
If I have no kids, I live in New Orleans, likely in Midcity.
If money is no object, I live in a mansion in Uptown New Orleans.

If you can't afford to send your kids to private schools and you can't afford to live in a decent sized home in New Orleans with kids, live on the north shore.
Also, if your job is on the Northshore, live there.

The answer to this is the Southshore. You won't find any* area of the Northshore where it costs as much per square foot as it does for several of the areas in Orleans Parish.

Where would you live?

Now this is a much more difficult question to answer. Everything in Orleans Parish is more expensive than anywhere else in the state. If you are not worried about getting the most bang for your buck then I would say Southshore is for you. However, if you are raising a family and looking to stretch your money a little further I would definitely consider the Northshore.

New Orleans has better education

For private schools, yes
For public schools, absolutely not

Again, everything about Orleans Parish is more expensive so it really depends on how much money you have, where you work, and do you have kids.

I see very little Orleans Parish Schools in the Top 25. Now if you are looking at Public Schools with selective admissions like Ben Franklin, Lusher, and Lake Forest then you are correct but I would assume the chances of getting in are not very high.

Good point. In that case the private schools on the Southshore definitely put the private schools on the Northshore to shame (and this is coming from a private school grad on the Northshore).

New Orleans has better education, entertainment, food, and opportunities than the north shore in every way.

We didn't plan it this way but all the kids at south shore schools.. wife commutes downtown everyday. I ask if she's ready to move... its always hell no!!!

We could never buy the house we have on the south shore and be reasonable...

Yes, but everyone has a different definition of "higher-end living". Some people think it's having a 2000sqft McMansion 2 miles from a chemical plant in the middle of what used to be a canefield.

I put the star because there is one or two places like on the river in Madisonville or on the Lakefront in Mandeville. The nice neighborhoods like TCC and Southdown don't come close, just compare the cost of a lot.
