During the confrontation Thursday, 911 dispatchers told Kidder that Wilcox could have a gun under his seat and may be threatening suicide-by-cop, according to WLWT. Kidder said since he knew backup was coming shortly, he held off shooting Wilcox.
"I was trying to open a dialogue with him. 'I don't want to shoot you, get on the ground,' but he wasn't having it. He kept repeating, 'Shoot me.' At one point, he said 'Shoot me or I'll shoot you,'" Kidder told WLWT.
The situation escalated: Wilcox put his hand in his pocket and again charged at Kidder — who is seen on the video tripping and falling backwards.
"He got towards my face right as I lost balance," Kidder told WLWT. "I'm thinking at this point that if he goes into attack me, that I'll have to use deadly force to defend myself."
But he waited.
"Law enforcement officers all across the nation have to deal with split-second decisions that mean life or death. I wanted to be absolutely sure before I used deadly force," he said.
Backup arrived just in time, and Wilcox surrendered.
The news report said this cop decided ON HIS OWN to start wearing a body cam. He could have shot this guy as he was charging and would have been justified. He risked his life showing such restraint.

I was speaking more to the fact that it wasn't his first time in a high stress situation. I wasn't referring to his military training.

I am betting he will leave the force after being berated by his fellow officers for failing to shoot, with their reasoning being he my one day be their backup and cost them their life for hesitating to shoot in a justified situation.

Seriously? Nobody is going to point out the elephant in the room of that story?
Or should I say the white elephant?

U.S. Marine... Huge difference btw cops like him and your operator wannabe cop.
Edit: yeah, the white elephant may have made the difference

Did he show restraint or did he fail to act?

Good video. However, this video will actually do more harm than good.
This will worsen the racial tension within our country. Millions of people will say he would have shot if he was of a different skin color

If he didn't have the body cam, this probably would have turned out differently

I doubt it.
He bought and wore the body cam on his own, so even if he did something shady he could just take it off/destroy it and no one would be the wiser. People that go out and buy a body cam to wear aren't the cops you have to worry about.

Another reason to get cameras on all police. Shows everything, for better or worse. This will protect both officers and the public.
