Staying in character constantly doesn't make a great acting performance. His work is interesting, but it's impossible to say that one actor's performance is better than another's. The Oscars basically exist as a giant promo for the movie industry.

I think that comes pretty close to my thoughts.

I dont think anyone here thinks that. DDL is far from the only actor that employs the method
His work stands on its own. And role for role youre not gonna find anyone with a more impressive résumé

but I just think some actor's best performances are better than DDL's.
I really can't think of any performances by actors/actresses that are better than the ones DDL gave in My Left Foot and There Will Be Blood.
I know a lot of folks on here will probably disagree but I think Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler was better, even though he didn't win the Oscar that year. At times I felt like I was watching a documentary about a real person named Randy the Ram instead of Mickey Rourke playing a character.

Tom Hanks
Tom Hanks in the scene where Jenny tells him that little Forrest is his is one of the greatest acting jobs in history IMO.

No one is saying it does. Plenty of actors employ that method of acting. But to say that Daniel Day-Lewis doesn't give great performances is like me saying Peyton Manning has had the career of an average QB.

Even the most generic of movie fans can tell you that Al Pacino's performance in The Godfather Part II completely dwarfs Mark Wahlberg's performance in Transformers: Age of Extinction. Sometimes it's very easy to spot a superior product.

Honestly, versatility should definitely factor into these GOAT conversations
I'm not saying DDL couldnt pull of comedic timing, but I'd have to see it. Otherwise the list is more like..
Hanks
Deniro
Hoffman
Robin Williams
All those guys have given iconic dramatic performances as well as carried comedy roles perfectly

Came to mind for me as well. He's at least on par IMO if you're looking at his whole body of work.

male actors? DDL is a perfectly respectable favorite for your #1 but I usually enjoy performances from these guys more than DDL

I'd say eventually Leo Decaprio will pass him

finally someone brought him up. I'm not saying he is or isn't better than DDL. I think DDL's 3 oscar's speak for themselves, but, Joaquin is absolutely at the top of his game right now and i really believe he is one of the top 3 actors working.
I fricking love me some Leo, and I think he does a tremendous job at picking entertaining roles and playing them well, but i just don't think he's quite on the same level as DDL or phoenix. Cool thing about Leo and Phoenix though, is they both seem to be getting better. Leo will probably win an oscar soon, however, and Phoenix will not, simply based on what he said about the oscars a couple years back

If I told you to give me one actor to play his parts in Good Morning Vietnam, One Hour Photo, Mrs.Doubtfire, Dead Poets, Patch Adams, Death to Smoochy, Garp, and Good Will Hunting who would you say?
Robin Williams was a force. I never said he was better, but I am asking how we define the criteria here. Acting is more than delivering complex dramatic characters
