Would You Draft La'el Collins at 13 if you planned to play him at Guard?

I think that Collins will make a good Tackle in the NFL.

I think that he would be a perennial All-Pro at Guard.

Do you draft him at 13 if you think that he can anchor your line and be an All-Pro for the next decade or more at Guard?

Let him play tackle for a year or two, then transition him to guard as needed.

I would draft him. I think he would be a monster at guard. Either him or the Iowa lineman and I would be fine with it.

If you thought this why wouldn't you draft him?

At 13.

To play Guard.

I have read people here over the years say that we should never draft a Guard in the first round. Plus, he projects at Tackle, but I think he would make a better Guard over the long haul.

He will be a good Tackle and a great Guard, IMO. I'd rather have someone be dominant on the OLine than just be good. I can get "good" in later rounds or in a FA.

I think this as well, so my answer is yes.

I think I'd do the opposite.
Let him the fill the guard need now so he can replace Strief when the time comes.

So? There aren't more than 4-5 players in a draft that will be perennial All-pros, unless it's a P/K/FB you take that especially at 13.

Yes. I think his floor is a good starting Guard for the next 10 years or so. His ceiling could be anywhere from All-Pro Guard to All-Pro RT. His flexibility would give us a lot of options going forward. Strief probably has another 2-3 years at most before we move on. Would be nice to have a potential replacement already starting on the line.

If you think the guy can be an All Pro for a decade, you take him, regardless of position on offense/defense. Guards are very important in our offense anyway, as Drew Brees struggles when he gets pressure up the gut and we're putting a big emphasis on the running game.

With knowing exactly how Jahri Evans' career turned out, would you have drafted him at 13? I would've. I think Collins would be just as solid at guard in his career but with the ability to kick outside when necessary.

Play Collins at guard for a couple years and then transition him to RT after Strief leaves/retires.

Absolutely. The reason why most teams do not draft guards until later on is because they do not value them as much as Tackles. In our system, a dominate Guard is more important that a dominate Tackle. As a result, if they truly believe he will be an All-Pro, they have to draft him when they believe they have a chance to.

Also, the last few years you have been seeing some of these trends change anyway. Dallas drafted a Center in the 1st, one of the Pouncey's was drafted to play Center in the 1st. And, there have been a few guards drafted in the 1st.

You draft him at #1 if necessary if you think he's going to be an All-Pro and anchor your line for the next decade.

IMO, that does not make sense. We have 2 really good, not great, tackles right now. And, we have a hole at the guard spot from trading away Grubbs.

Depends on if any stud drops to 13 and how far the drop off is from Collins and say Cann in the 2nd.

Would hope we could trade down a few picks and then grab him.

He may start at guard on some teams but eventually is at least a right tackle, maybe even a LT.

13 should be too valuable of a pick and we should find a player of equal talent at a higher impact position. Guard is not a high enough impact position to be taken at 13. My 2 cents. You can't use a Jahri Evans, a 4th round pick, as justification on why we should take a player like that at 13.

Would I? Yes

Will we? No

We've had a history of not finding OL in the 1st round, but finding the gems later on. I think this is what we'll continue (which I understand). I trust our o-line evaluation and I can bet we'll find someone worth a damn in the 2nd or 3rd.
