Johnny Jones hit a HR by landing John Treloar. One of the best tacticians I have ever met. WIll be a major plus for #LSU.

Jones spoke to a handful of candidates, including another former LSU assistant, Butch Pierre, about the job. But he decided to go in a similar direction as he did when he hired Musselman -- a coach with NBA experience.

Awesome work by MegaTiger3 getting the rumor here this morning, but it has been confirmed by three different sources close to the situation and it is expected that Jones will make the hire official soon.

(EDIT: It was made offical right around 3:40pm 4/15/15)

He will not join the staff until July 1 after his work with the Suns is complete.

Here's audio of ex LSU coach John Brady talking about Treloar and how he will fit into LSU's current staff -- LINK

Yea. He's been to final fours at two different colleges and has worked under Bob Knight.

This is what John Brady had to say about him:

quote:

"He has a consistency and temperament that's refreshing," said Brady, now head coach at Arkansas State. "He approaches it from a defensive standpoint. The way he evaluates players, he knows who's talented. He likes to know who is tough, competitive and consistent. That reflects on a player's character. He helped me with managing players, skill development, breaking down tape, putting together game plans. He was another head coach. But he's not a credit seeker. He just wants to win."

Johnny's ability to attract top-notch assistant coaches is going to keep him and LSU at a high level for a very long time. Just baffles me at how much better Johnny is at basically everything than Trent Johnson.

Nice hire. It's great that we were able to bring him back with good NBA experience.

I think it's hilarious so many fans of a "football school" can't respect Jones, yet this is the second NBA coach he's poached. Impressive. Guys like Musselman and Treloar have options and don't leave to work under a scrub

Sadly, Donny Guerinoni is still sitting at home. /sarcasm font

Good get, yet again, for John Jones.

Not quite. I like the hire, but he was a front office guy in the NBA. He was an NBDL coach, but that's not really on the same level as Musselman (think Alan Dunn as compared to Leo Mazzone).

Definitely not as impressive (on paper) as the hire of Musselman, however, this may be a better fit. I really hope some of the local media guys can reach out to Garrett Temple to talk about Treloars efforts with him during his redshirt year. All reports from everyone are very positive so I'm pretty excited about this hire. Plus he seems like the type of guy who may be good staying a while and not just jumping to another job.

Given the media's use of "coming home", I don't think he's leaving a comfortable position for a quick tenure. i hope at least.

He's a low key guy with two kids who could probably benefit from a stable home. From all reports, he loves LSU and loves being in the southeast so this could be a really good long term fit. An eventual associate head coach type guy who should get reasonably compensated and have good job security cause Jones isn't going anywhere.
