How difficult is it to get a 297 on the GRE? I did well in school and am a naturally good standardized test taker, I just have no frame of reference when trying to determine if I want to take this test or not. I don't HAVE to have it for what I'm trying to do, but it would make things easier.

Edit: Sorry, it's a 297 on the combined verbal and quantitative. Not the whole test.

My wife teaches GRE prep classes, it's an average score really, so it shouldn't be that difficult. The wife scored a 321. Do practice tests, over and over, and get used to the format.

They changed the scale. The highest you can get now is a 340.

Not too difficult. A few of my undergraduate students used the Princeton review book and all scored over 310.

They changed the math section up quite a bit from when I first took it 8 years ago.

Originally my math score was much better than my verbal. I flip flopped under the new system. Still scored better than a 300 and I don't consider myself a strong standardized test taker. However, I did practice with a study manual for a couple of months before the test.

He has the right scale, 260 is the lowest possible. Those numbers are meaningless, it's percentiles that matter.

The key is answering the first ten right in the computer test.

If you get one wrong of the first ten, you're fricked.

I took this years ago but it was really just a formality for getting into school - they don't really care about the score as long as it's not terrible. Do most graduate programs really care about your score?

Yes, it's how they weed people. Grade inflation is a real thing, so the GRE gives schools a different parameter that is more reliable. It really starts to matter in competitive programs/top schools.

Particularly the subject tests.

You should blow your specialty out of the water.

Agreed, GRE and ACT were much better than that horrible essay test called the SAT. Bunch of fancy vocab words I've still never run across to this day

I got a 310 on the GRE using the princeton review book. Needed to work on vocab so I spent much more time on that versus the math and still did better in the math. You'll do fine as long as you use those review books and actually take the time to study a little each week.

What is the basic application process for graduate programs?

For vet school we had the GRE but like I said it was just a check mark really. The bulk of the process was a very long application that includes a national, more generic one and then a separate one for each school - both require a pretty long, typed personal statement and numerous other questions about your experiences in the profession, related work, school, etc... If you made it past that you got an invite for an interview with an admissions committee. It was all pretty expensive.
