Monte Carlo draw.
Live Scoreboard.
ESPN3 appears to be carrying the matches.
Clay court season takes over the next two months. Monte Carlo is the first of the big three Roland Garros tuneups, but I think is the odd Masters event that is considered optional. Looks like everybody is there, except Murray, who just got married. Anyway, after Monte Carlo, there are a couple lower tier events, then Madrid and Rome.

Clay court season seems more interesting than normal as Nadal looks vulnerable and Djokovic is dominating the tour. Not really sure anybody else is a serious RG contender. Djokovic has a strong shot at the calendar grand slam IMO.

This event probably has the nicest court/view in the world. Looks like it is all on Tennis Channel, but internet coverage on ESPN3.

Monfils looks like he is wearing pajamas for this event.

Looked earlier today and Nadal had worse odds to win the French than Djokovic. I'm not sure when the last time is Nadal has played in the French and not been favored.

The first year he won is almost certainly the answer to that.

Odds were near even money last year, but slightly in favor of Nadal, and odds were near even money -- or maybe even slightly in favor of Nadal -- before Djokovic doubled up on IW and Miami and Nadal looked fairly pedestrian.

I was gonna start this thread earlier today, but then I started doing something else. What a great event. I would love to see it.

(1)
I don't think anybody else is.

(2)
He does indeed. He looks to be in 2011 form. I don't think Nadal takes the French.

Yeah, I held off a few days while they got the first round out of the way, now almost everybody is playing every day. It seems way too early for a big RG tuneup, but I guess they have to space them out. The players seem to dislike Madrid due to some mild altitude and other conditions issues. So Monte Carlo and Rome are clearly the most important events.

Fognini v. Dimitrov should be good in some respect. Either we'll see some stylish points from Dimitrov, or another bizarre Italian meltdown (example), or hopefully both.

Fognini is good when he tries, and especially on clay. He's got the maturity of an 8 year old, though. When he starts losing, he just checks out and quits. Which sucks for everybody.

Update on morning matches:

1. The Maple Leaf Servebot beat Robredo in three sets.
2. Grigor absolutely annihilated Stan The Man, who has clearly decided that being an elite tennis player is overrated.
3. Monfils took the first set against Fed, and they are on serve in the second. I don't think Fed's really worth a shite on clay anymore. If I were him I'd consider pulling a Murray in 2013 and sit out the clay court season to go all in for one more Wimby. I don't see him winning any of the other majors, and he's like 34 now, so if he wants to get another Wimby title, he better get on it.

4. Berdy and Bautista are at 6-6 in the first set tiebreak. ETA: Berdy takes the first set breaker 9-7. This is good as I have a tiny bit of money on Berdy.

Next up is The Great Great Rafael Nadal and John Isner. Then Tsonga and Cilic in what should be an interesting match that I think Joe Willie wins. Cilic still isn't quite back to form.

Then we've got Novak Djokovic and his nigh unfathomable 75-1 odds in the third round of a Masters 1000 event.

Final match of the night is Simon v. Ferrer. I think Ferrer definitely has the edge in that one, but not by as much as the oddsmakers are saying imho.

Federer dismissed by Clownfils. Isner hanging tough with Rafa. It's funny with these big guys. You'd think they have trouble with the movement on clay, but they can handle the high bounces and hit through the court better than the rest of the tour. See Soderlings two French Open finals appearances.

The jury is out on that. He struggled a bit in his two hardcourt events last month. I think he is at like 80% of his greatness, which means he should still roll most everybody but Djokovic on clay. It's tough to see him winning a major anywhere else in his current form.

Isner takes the second set from Rafa. Even though the ESPN is not carrying the coverage on TV, it's on ESPN3 for us cube monkeys.

Isner is a surprisingly competent clay court player and always has been. Some of you may remember him giving Rafa a scare in the first or second round of RG back in 2011. His movement is awful, and we shouldn't pretend like it isn't awful, but that high bounce really kind of works in his favor in that it pops the ball up right in his strikezone and he can just take full cuts on his forehand.

Isner is generally a scary player for any of the top guys. I think even moreso than Raonic. Raonic might be the better player overall, but when Isner really gets into a serving zone, he's gonna win his serve easy, and he's probably gonna win the breaker. That makes him a very tough out.

He'll never be what he used to be. You could even see it last season a little bit. Even as he was beating Djokovic in the RG final, he just looked a weary man to me.

And he was never gonna be any good after he lost that step. He doesn't play anything even loosely resembling old man tennis.

I agree with this but I would modify it a bit in that it's tough for me to see him beating Djokovic at Roland Garros. The last two (three?) matches between them on that court have been decided by razor thin margins. And Nadal has noticeably dropped down a notch.

He'll lose with honor. He'll get a set in. It won't look bad on paper, but when judged by the eyeball test, Djokovic will win in a convincing manner.

I'll just add that I don't wanna see Rafa do a "victory lap" season as the 6th or 7th best player in the world. That sort of thing would make me sad. Rafa needs to hang up the racquets when he can no longer play tennis like Rafael Nadal. For me, I wanna see him playing that scrambling, pouncing, athletic style, or I don't wanna see him at all.

I wonder if Novak makes sure to pull out his A game against Cilic because of hte whole Serb/Croat thing. Like, I wonder if he secretly hates Cilic because he's Croatian.
