Spinoff: Problem using human technology and thinking to find aliens

So this has probably already been thought out more somewhere, I just haven't seen it. But we're trying to discover life that we have no knowledge of, right? (No verified knowledge for the smartasses)
How can we be sure we're even looking the right way for this life form we know nothing about? We're trying to use human knowledge to discover things we have no knowledge about.
Side note: I've thought along these same lines when people try to use human knowledge to understand or comprehend an all powerful God.

What if aliens aren't anything like us? Totally non relatable.

Mostly the way they have been looking is by artificial EM emissions.

We are looking in the right way because we are looking in every way, possible at the moment. Looking for any alien life at all is being done by looking for the things life needs. Unless there is a planet full of wizards out there somewhere, all life needs water so that's what we look for.
Intelligent life is more tricky, while trying to find any life at all is the broadest search possible, we have to narrow it some for intelligence. We know that there is a very simple and useful area of physics that can be taken advantage of for so many purposes. This subject is the electromagnetic spectrum, specifically radio waves, and an interesting quality of radio waves is that they are very (dirty) they go everywhere. We take advantage of this quality and search for civilizations that emit radio waves by scanning the universe for signals.
Now to finally address your post more directly... Sure there are most likely unfathomable numbers of civilizations out there that don't use nor ever will use any equipment that will ever even accidentally produce radio noise, but there should still be countless other civilizations that do.
Your question is kind of like someone with a magnet asking how do I find wooden needles in this metal needle factory?

We are working under the assumption that all life forms need the same basics for life, and are at different stages of evoluation. So, assuming the civilization is more advanced than us, they would be able to understand our communication. But to put into prospective, there's an illustration floating on the Internet about the distance our radio communications have traveled. It hasn't even came close to another star. The distance is so vast, it is hard to imagine anyone ever hearing us.

Post is mostly correct, but alpha centauri is only about 4 light years away, so wouldn't any 4+ year old transmissions have made it there already? Granted incredibly weak signals, but super advanced aliens can be assumed to have really good amplifiers.
