Going to Mexico Beach soon.

How safe would it be for me to launch my Pescador 12 and get out past the waves, still in sight of the beach, for a little fishing?

I would be alone, and probably only carry 1 rod with me.

Depends on the surf and seas.

I don't really have the urge to go out alone, but a lot of people do. You don't need to go past the color change. Troll there for various things with a duster rig and you'll be good to go. Put frozen or live cigs on the duster rig.

Strap everything in before you punch through, don't want to lose all your chit.

Watch for the odd skrimp boat. Other than that, I don't see a problem.

It is nothing to it. Time the waves and rock on. Once past the breakers, it is easy. Fish the trough between the two prevailing sandbars.

I'm going to be stupid paranoid about going out by myself. I'll have family on the beach, so I'm talking only a couple hundred yards.

Is it even worth it for the fishing?

It's not bad once you're out.

You can catch all kinds of stuff out that far. Mainly mackerel though.

Yes. I do it all the time. Going out is pretty easy and fun as you'll just crest and push through the waves (don't go out if the surf is stupid big). Just stay perpendicular and go straight into them.

Coming back in is when you'll generally run into problems and potentially turn over. But... I mean... you're talking about turning over in 3-5 feet of water most likely. Just have stuff strapped in.

Main advantage of getting out past the break is getting out of most of the junegrass and other crap that gets in the wash.

Pescador 12

Did it last week in an 8 foot kayak at Seaside.

Didn't fish, but was out where the water turns darker and the fishing boats cruise. Huge schools of fish and at one point was surrounded by no less than 20 bn dolphins.

BUT, it depends on the weather. The wind was blowing in and the currents were pushing me back in and not too much down the beach.

East of Panama city. Near Cape San Blas.

Second question. Who would try this in an ascend fs12t? I have both so just asking.

Chances are it'll be flat when you go. There isn't a whole lot of groundswell this time of year, so unless you just happen to try on a day when it's big, you'll be fine. If you're there for a few days, you can really pick your days. Ask the lifeguards or the guys working the beach if they know what the surf forecast is, or check out swellinfo.com whenever you go. They're the most accurate surf report for the gulf and they have a CSB report. Even if there is supposed to be surf, you can get out early when the wind is still offshore and have no problem at all.

I would go in the pescador... If you're comparing it to the new model fs12t. It's quicker and easier to paddle.

For all around fishing, I like the new ascend, but for bTV, I woudo prefer the pescador.

Swellinfo is a good source, but keep an eye on it. It can be wrong, dead wrong. And look at the wind speeds, a lot of times they are more indicative of the conditions than the surf. Look out for a north wind, it can make it easy launching but very difficult coming back in.

There was a group on PFF that had to beach miles away from their vehicles because they couldn't fight the wind back in.

Surf forecasting websites are like weather websites. You have to take them all with a grain of salt. That being said, swellinfo is by far the most accurate for surf on the gulf among magicseaweed, surfline, surfing mag, etc. The only way to ever know for sure is by going to the beach and checking the surf. This time of year though, it'll be flat more often than not.

I've done it a dozen or so times around Pensacola/Gulf Shores. Wear a life jacket, strap your stuff in, and don't go out if you feel uncomfortable. It can be fun but honestly I never feel as comfortable fishing out of a yak in the ocean as in lakes. I'm a wuss in the ocean but you might be surprised how small you feel a couple hundred yards out there in a kayak.
