Louisiana's Specks Five Years Later--a fishing guides take on impact of BP spill

LINK /
I ran across this article reading this link in the Mississippi saltwater LINK forum. Chris Bush is advocating for more tagging and taking few larger trout from the fishery.

It would be nice to see CCA lead the charge by removing the bounty on our breeders. Remove the incentive for killing big trout. Lead by example, right?
I get there are no laws against keeping mule trout but I can't help but think that it would set a huge example if CCA urged it's members to self impose a slot limit.
The recreational fishing population is getting bigger everyday. We can only catch and release into grease for so long. Something has to give.

I think a strict limit from Fourchon to the La./Ms. line needs to be instituted right now based on all the scientific evidence that is coming out daily showing the fishery is in trouble. 10 Specks per day with a 1 over 20. Guides aren't allowed to keep trout on a guided trip. Also should institute a limit on White trout and croakers too because their populations have really fallen off since 2010.

I would be fine with no minimum and maybe 5 over say 20". You would have less throwback kills and limit the number of 4+ lb fish taken.

I would think commercial shrimp trawlers are to blame for the absence of croaker and white trout.
My personal opinion as seen through my eyes over the last 11 years in Terrebonne is that the fishery can handle a 25per limit pretty well, but there's just really no point in having it that high.
I dont mind the 25 and i think the fishery can handle that
i do like the idea of guides not being able to count themselves towards the 25, each customer gets 25 and only 1 over 21 inches or whatever, i dont know the right number

I catch trout over 20" pretty common. and it seems the fishery can sustain a 25 fish limit. if any of yall want to keep 10 fish, then go for it, but I'll continue to keep what I legally can.

Can you provide a link for this? I have actually heard the opposite about speckled trout.

This is the mentality we need to work to change. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

agreed. Geeze, wasn't it just two years ago when everyone was hammering the trout out of Terrebonne Parish? Seems I can remember threads where people were claiming the trout were unbelievably thick- and claimed the BP spill had helped as it kept fishermen out of the water when it happened. I have a hard time believing the resource can't sustain itself becasue sport fishermen are putting too much pressure on them.

Yes you need to provide a link BC what your saying directly contradicts the states fisheries findings.

Not links that discuss the impact of oil on speckled trout..... links that show that the speckled trout fishery is in trouble.

Based on my personal experience with catching speckled trout, there are only a handful out there.

look, I appreciate your conservation perspective. But some things are better left to individual choice. Way too much money, time, and effort is expended to make anyone feel guilty for keeping 25 specks. I'm all for keeping less if YOU wan to do so. But I think it should be an individual's choice.

What about a group of 5 keeping 125? If everyone keeps 25, those numbers could get out of hand really fast.
