Michelle MacLaren has left Warner Bros.' upcoming Wonder Woman movie.

“Given creative differences, Warner Bros. and Michelle MacLaren have decided not to move forward with plans to develop and direct Wonder Woman together,” said the studio in a statement, via The Hollywood Reporter.

It was announced last November that Warner Bros. had brought on MacLaren, a TV veteran whose credits include Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead, to develop and direct their Wonder Woman solo movie starring Gal Gadot.

Wonder Woman is slated to open June 23, 2017; it is unclear at this point if MacLaren's departure will affect this date.

Stay tuned for more information on this development as it becomes available.

That's disappointing. If they're hell bent on the female director route, she was one I was pretty pleased with taking over.

Yea, I was unhappy when I saw the news. I'm not overly concerned about the project, though. It's usually a good thing when this decision is made early in the process. The last thing I want is a movie to get started when the director and producers are not on the same page. I hope they find a good replacement.

This happens all the time. It happened to Antman. Usually it's for the better. When producers and directors but heads, it's usually a disaster.

Let's see what other director they can get that their only qualification is to have tits. At least Michelle MacLaren is a legit director, but everyone of the finalists last time lacked a dick and 3/4 of the finalists were worthless choices. I'm guessing the creative differences were linked to DC wanting it to entirely revolve around "girl power" while MacLaren wanted something more substantial than that. I have no faith in DC as of this moment.

shrug.

If they run out and tap another director simply because she has boobs...then I will take the wait and see approach.

If they get a director is is the best they can find man or woman...my interest increases greatly.

My next two wishes for Directors would be

1) Speilberg- Perfect vehicle for him to return to form. Combines the sense of wonder and otherworldy marvel that he excels at with his newfound sense of nihilism and protective retrobution.

2) Guillermo Del Toro- If he can get the right weight of gravitas in the script he would make it visually stunning and fun.

Unfortunately can't think of great female director that I really want to see do it.

The only female director I can think of that would make me do a back flip is Kathryn Bigelow. I'm sure a lot of people would disagree, but I think she's great. I hope they don't limit the list to females in the next search.

Some info is coming is about why Michelle MacLaren left or was let go from the project. Apparently her vision was more heavy action and less character driven.
quote:

The studio is declining to elaborate on the cliched “creative differences” joint statement that was issued when the two parted ways. But, according to multiple sources close to the project, the director’s vision for the movie was vastly different from the studio’s view. MacLaren envisioned the DC Comics-based “Wonder Woman” movie as an epic origin tale in the vein of “Braveheart,” whereas Warner wanted a more character-driven story that was less heavy on action.

Warner executives, these insiders said, became increasingly concerned about MacLaren directing a large-scale, action-packed production when her experience was limited to the small screen, where she made her name directing episodes of “Game of Thrones,” “Breaking Bad” and “The Walking Dead.”

The studio is expected to stick with a more character-driven movie with Jenkins on board. Also an experienced TV director of shows including “The Killing,” she cut her teeth on the indie feature “Monster.”

MacLaren was also unaccustomed to the laborious development process associated with making movies. One source described that process as “tortuous” when it came to the pre-production of “Wonder Woman.” After Jason Fuchs delivered his script, the studio put as many as five other writers on the project to work up various scripts while executives simultaneously tested story concepts. “They didn’t like MacLaren’s test,” said one studio executive. MacLaren’s rep declined comment.

One of the reasons that Warner acted so quickly in picking a replacement for MacLaren was to make sure the studio stayed on track for the film’s planned fall start date and 2017 release.

The studio will now look to get Jenkins up to speed quickly and is already preparing to find the male lead and love interest for “Wonder Woman” star Gal Gadot. Test offers for a handful of actors are expected in the next week.

I've also heard that she wanted WW to have a tiger sidekick. Sounds like it was for the best.

I liked the epic aspect of it, but the character aspect of Wonder Woman really needs be developed and explained as it is quite complex and provocative as intended. It shouldn't, however, lack epic action. I think Zack Snyder will probably have the most say anyway from what rumblings I've read. I think Patty Jenkins is a hopeful choice and nah...I don't think the Talking Tiger aspect was a good thing.

If there is going to be a talking tiger in the DCU it best be Tawky Tawny in the Captain M... Shazam movie.

I'm on board with that for a Shazam movie. It could kind of have an Ant-Man tone. Or maybe a little GotG.

I hope it has that kind of fun vibe. I worry that it won't with the tone they have created for the DCU. It would really suck to wait for years to get my favorite character in a movie only to see all the joy sucked out of him.

I'm actually still confident that a lighter Superman movie is still possible. Not completely Donner, but I think once Superman gets established and saves the world a few times, people will come around to accepting him. I don't know, maybe wishful thinking.
