I don't think the firey, in your face coach works in the NBA. That's more of a college deal IMO.

He could be like Scott Brooks and just yell, "INTENSITY!!!" during the timeouts.

One or two bad calls a game, sure... Laid back is fine, better than being a crybaby about it.

The amount of calls we got shafted on, I'd want monty to raise hell and get a t. It was that absurd

Oh yeah, I don't want Doc Rivers level crying about every call but has Monty ever gotten a T?

ETA - Monty is the only HC in the NBA with 0 techs. 5 assistants have more than him.

For comparison:
Thibodeau - 9
Kerr - 8
Pop - 8
Carlilse - 5

I think that's a criticism used by people just looking for more reasons to hate on Monty. Monty's problem is not lack of fire. There have been some losses this year where effort was a problem, but for the most part what we rightly complain about most games are rotations and strategy. I'd much rather Monty bring back Malone to help with the strategy than start showing more emotion on the sideline.

Agree with all of this.

I said in my post I was on the fence and gave him props for having this team on the brink of the playoffs. Not sure how that's looking for a reason to hate him more. It's a discussion about his temperament, not his strategies.

To me, this goes hand in hand with his overall temperament. Yes, these guys are professionals but you have to (IMO) project a BIT of a mean streak at times.

I think it's a valid topic.

And it might be dumb but I don't like that 5 assistants have more T's than him and he's the ONLY coach with 0. Your players need to see that every once in a while.

I didn't mean this post specifically, you're actually exploring the issue, most of the time it just seems like it's thrown out there as reason #999 why Monty sucks.

It is, I just think there are bigger problems that you either fix and this becomes background noise, or you fire him over and this doesn't matter.

Oh yeah, I agree. And to think a couple of T's means an extra win or two is irresponsible. I still like seeing that from a coach, especially when I feel like things are obviously not balanced as far as calls go.

I think last night was one of those times but it could just be me.

You get to pick who shoots your FTs on a T.

League as a whole shoots right around 80% on technical free throws.

Oops, just realized that was from 2005-2006. I don't see anywhere with current data.

Correct me if I am wrong but didn't Malone say he wasn't interested in returning?

He did choose Minnesota over New Orleans as a "coaching consultant" recently, but that's most likely because he thought there might be an actual opening there with Flip being the GM and HC. I'm sure Malone will try and get a HC job somewhere, but if he doesn't it's quite common to go back to being an assistant. I haven't seen him say anything negative about his time here. Have you seen something or were you reading him choosing Minny over NO as him not being interested in returning?

Do we know that Malone turned down NOLA?

Also, the frustrating part of watching Monty is how long it takes for him to react to a problem. How many times last night did we switch on defense in the 4th quarter with Harden? Harden figured it out and continually forced the switch so that he had Ryno on him (and then proceeded to abuse him for easy shots). Monty watching this continue to occur, but did not change the defense or call timeout. Instead, a 9 point lead became a 5 point deficit before he called timeout. He just sat there and stared into space.
