PE exam this Friday. Who's taking it?

Finally exam week. I feel like I am ready. This is the first test where Louisiana is allowing early taking as an option so I would think a lot more people will be taking it than normal.

Good luck. I meant to take it this year but didnt realize the deadline to sign up was December 1st. I'll likely sign up for the October Exam.

Thanks. Get a hold of someone's test masters notes if you haven't already. I would have been lost without them.

I took it in October in Houston. What discipline are you taking?

Transportation Depth.
Louisiana changed the rules this year. You are eligible to take the exam without the 4 years experience now.. however, you still can't get your license until you have 4 years experience.
LAPELS (La professional engineering and land surveying board) has made it clear that if you ever move out of state, some states might not honor the early taking of the exam, and you might need to take it again.
It kind of fricked me because I was eligible under the old rules to take the April 2015 exam since I had 3.5 years experience at the registration date. However, the new rules stipulate that unless you have 4 years at the registration date (which I don't), you are an "early taker."

I find the early option a bit puzzling
I don't see the advantage of letting you take it early. I'd rather know that the applicants are knowledgeable of the material at the time of licensure rather than fresh out of school.

Agreed. What the hell is the point of the FE exam if you can turn around 6 months later and take the PE?

Do you know of any other states that do this?
I wonder if after you become licensed in LA, could it still be an issue with registering with other states that currently have reciprocity

I think I'm going to just wait until I have my 4 years. Don't want to run into any issues down the line.

Pretty sure California and a few other western states allow the early taking.. but I don't see myself ever moving out there.

At that point, I would state my case as best as I could.. explaining that even though I am considered an "early taker," I actually did have 3.5 years experience at the registration deadline.

If I'm not mistaken, that has always been the case. If you graduate, then get your four years experience, but never take the FE. You can take the FE, then turn around and take the PE at the next available testing.
As far as taking it early, I don't see the big deal. It's going to be easier to take it when you are still fresh out of school. I don't see why it really matters, because there is just so much you can be doing with an engineering degree (even within your discipline), that a test isn't going to be able to cover everything to truly test if you are proficient enough to be a "professional engineer".

Good points made. I just don't see the reason for the change. I think it's harder to relearn all of this information the longer you are out of school. Seems like it is cheapened a bit by letting people take it fresh out of college. But if you can pass, you can pass. I guess it's not a big deal.

That's the reason I waited to take the PE exam. NY won't let you even apply until you have 4 years at application. So even if I went home to take it, NYS wouldn't recognize it. I plan on taking it in October, Civil/Structural. I contemplated taking SE/PE, but that's supposed to be way harder.
