Gotta put my buddy down. How do people do this!?!

I've had this guy as long as I've been married, longer than i've owned my house, longer than my kids. He would sit with me and watch a game outside by the fire. He loved my boys, they love him. They're in so much pain right now. My oldest, 10, said he just wanted to go with him. We finally got him to say what he meant, he wanted them to put him to sleep too so he could be with Rocky. I absolutely hate this. I'm a wreck. How do people do this? I know he's in so much pain and there's nothing that can be done, but I just feel like I"m such a terrible person for killing my dog. I love that dog.

there is no way around it...putting your dog down just flat sucks. unfortunately, it is one thing that you owe him for being such a good companion all these years...
one thing that I did hear recently is that dogs have no concept of lifespan...that is, they don't have any inkling that living ten more years is better than living 5 more minutes. all they know is what is going on right now...and if he is suffering, then "right now" sucks. With that in mind, there really is no reason to put it off for the pup's sake.
I actually heard this from someone with PETA or the Humane Society or someone like that, so it made me feel that the idea is at least a little more objective than I would have otherwise thought...
ETA: the rainbow bridge really helps me out in that situation...I get choked up every time I read it...

Have had to do this for several dogs. Never easy. Feed him a great meal before you take him, and be with him loving him right up until the end. We did this for our last dog, and it was a moment I still remember vividly. It's painful, but my dog deserved to die surrounded and being loved by the family he had been so faithful to.

It's the hardest thing you can do.
You don't have to 'put your kids down'. But your dog is about as close to that as you get. It's a lot easier these days since everyone just pays somebody to do it for them. But I've put a couple down before myself and it's just devastating. Of course people will hear that and think MONSTER, but it was only out of love. Not sure people understand that these days. Throwing money at them to keep them in pain is not doing that animal a favor.
I don't know man. It sucks. Dogs are not permanent. You have to go into it knowing what's coming on the other side.
Best answer for the grief is a puppy though.

One if the hardest things I ever had to do in my life. It sucks royally and the worst part is when you wake up or get home and they are not in their usual spot. It sucks and I'm sorry for you and your family.
That being said go get another one.

It hurts and it sucks. I was in EXACT same situation in 2010. Old guy was like my first born. I've got a poem the vet sent me after that ill post once I get to my office computer that'll help.

You are spot on. It is never an easy thing to do, but sometimes it's necessary. The only cure I have found is to get another one. Not a replacement, but more of a new soul to learn from and teach.

It's tough. Just try to remember that he/she had a good run and that it's for the best.

I did it a year ago for the first time in my life. I hate it more than anything I've ever done in my 42 years of life.
I hope my chocolate lab goes of natural causes...otherwise I'm gonna be a wreck for at least a week.
I'll just add this here: Being Catholic, I was taught in CCD, that dogs and other pets don't go to heaven because they don't have souls. Well, that's where me and the Catholic religion are at odds. I mean, why would our Lord put these wonderful creatures on Earth with us for companions...and then not allow them to spend all eternity with us in heaven. Phooey. All my pups are in heaven....That's what heaven is to me...being assaulted with tongues and noses from every pup I've ever known/owned once I get inside the pearly gates.

Sympathies to you. Your dog has had a great life because of you. Just know you're doing the last act of kindness you can for your friend.
