Just want to rip a few DVD's (yes, they're copy protected) and burn them later.

People seem to like DVDFab. I use Wonderfox because BitsDuJour gave a licensed copy away for free fairly recently. I'm having some trouble with aspect ratios and can't find where I'm going wrong, but any player that lets you force an aspect ratio gives me good results.

I used DVDFab back when I was ripping Netflix DVDs. Worked perfectly every time. DVDShrink was my go-to before that but I think it stopped getting supported many years ago and couldn't keep up with the latest copy protection methods.

MakeMKV - fast and simple, assuming you're ripping straight and not performing any kind of re-encoding.

Use dvdfab to rip the disk in its entirely.
Use Dvd shrink to shrink it down to 4.35gb, or if you want to use a DL disk, then skip using Dvd shrink
Burn video_ts folder to Dvd using imageburn
Done.

Handbrake. Handbrake all day.
Either get the dvdlib file or use MakeMKV to rip. I use both.

I use AcidRip on a Linux laptop to rip DVDs. It works great for avi format!

DVD Shrink + Burn Aware worked best for me. DVD Shrink will create an audio_ts and video_ts folders and Burn Aware automatically creates a DVD video from a video_ts folder.

Back when I used to do a lot of rips I used a combo of:
AnyDVD HD - Best software there is at circumventing the DRM on everything from DVD's to the latest Blurays. I also used it to rip Blurays. Sucks that they don't do lifetime subs anymore!!!
DVDShrink - I used for ripping DVD's. it is an old program that is not maintained anymore and can be hard to find on the interweb but it still works wonderfully.
