Yesterday after leaving NOLA, ate at Shaya for lunch (yum), the wife wanted to stop in for a coffee bubble tea at Pho Bang in the East. She didn't have cash and the tea didn't equal their CC minimum, so she bought a "sweet banana rice" thing from the funky selection of crap in the glass case. We made some fried rice for lunch and ate this thing along side. We're not even sure what it was...

Any ideas on what this concoction is? It wasn't buried in the ground or anything, was it?

No, it was rice...and hard. It wasn't pork, at least I hope not.

We couldn't find any redeeming quality to it.

Wonton is correct but there's a variety of this "cake". As described, it is a sweet banana rice cake which I personally think is of dessert/refreshment. The main ingredients are: glutinous rice flour, a type bean, banana leaf(wrapper), and an "asian" banana. Everything gets wrapped in banana leaves, tied and are boiled for a hours until everything is cooked.

I personally don't like this variety of rice cake but prefer the one with pork and mung beans which are more prevalent during Lunar New Years when it's gifted to a household that celebrates Lunar New Years.

I had hoped it was a deadly snake you pointed at and watched them skin and steam.

It was not, and so goes my disappointment.

sigh
