Man I wish that I really knew. Many years ago I was fishing off the old bridge at Grand Isle near Bridgeside. I was catching some small croakers, and my wife's friend, Rosie Poche, suggested I cast one out. I was using a surf rod and threw out the eight inch croaker under a cork. Some time after the cork plunged , and the fight began. I brought a very large trout to the surface. I put the rod down and began bringing in the line hand over hand. About halfway up the trout shook his/her head and got off. This was a massive fish; I will never know if I had some sort of record or not.

Not really sure how big my best is. I have been fortunate to fish Venice in some of it's great years well before Katrina.
My most memorable trip was out at Sandy point about 12 years ago and we caught four trout that were bigger than 27", we released all but one which is on a friends wall to this day.
Another winter time spot that is now gone, we caught only seven fish, but all were bigger than 26".
I have caught a few horses in the Lake over the years but nothing 7 lbs or bigger but a TON of 5-6 lbers in the Lake alone.
A rule I would suggest to many is anything over 26" gets mounted or released. I have upset a few on my boat over the years but they just don't make many that size, the their reproduction is critical.

They are our female breeder trout, killing one would be unfortunate.
Basically, two 1 lb. females lay more eggs than one large one. So keeping one big female with eggs is less damaging than keeping several small females with eggs.

I don't live anywhere close to the coast but when my parents had a place on Dauphin Island I caught one behind the house on the bay side that was 22".

approx 10 miles due east from the Empire jetty. murdered them on live croakers under a cork. not sure if those rigs are still there. long time ago, when a good trip was measured in how many ice chests of trout you caught. way before there was a limit

Don't remember the exact numbers, so I'll make these up, but his point was this: A large female spawns an average of 5 million eggs over the spring to fall spawn. A one pound female spawns an average of 2.5 million eggs over the same time frame. Taking 10 one pound females out of the fishery is 5 times worst than taking one large female.

That only makes sense if the number eggs is constant. The problem is we know it's not constant. We know the females egg production is directly related to their length. The bigger the fish, the more eggs. So taking 10 fish that produce 2.5 million eggs is not the same as taking one larger fish. That larger fish could have produced more eggs over her life time than all 10 of the smaller fish combined, not to mention she's going to continue to produce more and more every year.

I'm gonna go with the biologists opinion over a couple of weekend warriors if you don't mind.
Your theory is flawed. If I take a large 5 year old female out of the fishery, there's a potential loss of X eggs for maybe one or two more years.
If I take 10 small females out of the fishery, that's a potential loss of X(10) times 5 or 6 years.

my wife might be pissed but who turns down titties. Honestly I don't fish it much. My buddy had a place down there on the south side closer to pier 33. We drink beer and catch croakers, then sling the croakers out and catch trout.
When I have fished it's almost exclusively at the cutoff. When there's water moving through there it will produce. There are also a few deeper holes to the west of the cutoff.
Do a search on the Pensacola fishing forum. There are quite a few threads there about little lagoon from folks who fish it almost daily.

There are some no motor zones to help preserve the lagoon. People that fish there are really big on conserving the lagoon (as they should be)
