Put them in an Ice chest, pull the plug, rinse crawfish with the hose. Repeat until they are clean.

Myths persist about saltwater purges, tail curl for cooking crawfish

ETA:
quote:

Washing crawfish for as little as 10 minutes in water helps remove mud and debris but does little to eliminate intestinal wastes, he said, and salt appears to be of no benefit.

“The only way to significantly reduce size and content of the intestinal tract is with a 12- to 24-hour freshwater purge, which is difficult and impractical for homeowners to do.”

In college, had a guy try to make fun of me for picking out the poop line in crawfish. I never understood why you'd intentionally eat poop, if you have the option not to.

And that funky taste you have left in your mouth after you eat crawfish, is what happens when you eat the poop line.

When I'm tearing up some craydads uninstalling the fecal tract is not an option because it's never exposed. It's a simple twist, pull, pinch, bite motion. The only way I could see the tail meat and subsequent poop pipe is to install a Gopro in me belly.

About 4 hours before I boil I put the crawfish in an ice chest and rinse/fill with water. About 20-30 minutes later I drain it, and refill with clean water. I repeat this process no fewer than 5 times. By the time I'm ready to boil the crawfish are exponentially cleaner with no grit or grime and a much better finished product.

Get two of these tubs from Lowes or Home Depot. They nest inside of each other. Drill a bunch of 3/8" holes in the bottom of one tub for drainage, and place it inside the second tub. Dump your sack of crawfish in and fill it up with clean water from the hose pipe. Let them swim around for a while then remove the top bin, thus straining the crawfish, and dump the water from the bottom bin. Repeat several times. Tell your friends how smart you are for thinking of this ingenious system. It is much easier to handle than an ice chest. Profit...

I dont, we get them prepurged from a guy that keeps them in circulating water for 72 hours. Clean as a whistle when they come out.
