I've heard and definitely referred to a baitcast as open faced.

To me though, there are only 3 classifications.

Baitcast, spincast(Zebco), and spinning

Do an image search for "open faced reels"

I did. Still doesn't change my statement.

Nope.

it has always been spinning or open faced to me, my family, and my friends

In all parts of the world but SOUTH Louisiana a baitcaster is called an open face reel. In SOUTH Louisiana a spinning reel is called an open face reel because they want to sound all grown up like the rest of us. BTW in my corner of the universe a spinning reel is referred to as an "Upside down line twisting POS".

That's why I avoid the term altogether. Open = spinning AND baitcasting.

Curado + 30# braid is all I really need. Can throw just about everything in the box comfortably.

Now I think you're just making this stuff up. Salmon is Ned.

Salmon's toms are rustled. Lay off the guy, he doesn't wear socks.

But I do agree with him, I don't know anyone who calls a spinning reel an open-faced reel. Growing up you weren't a man until you could cast an open-faced reel and that meant a baitcaster.

Just got some new Aqua Dream spoons. Pretty excited about that until I don't catch a fish after 10 casts then go back to my vudu shrimp.

Where I lived, we weren't a man until we could whip the arse of someone who made fun of what we fished with.

But seriously, do people really think this? Seems silly.

Not sure if it will really matter. I got a crab, black with chartreuse and a mullet one. They look pretty....not sure if the reds will care for them over a gold spoon.

yep

growing up, you were not to be taken seriously as a fisherman if you couldn't throw an open faced reel, aka baitcaster

we know its not closed...

I've never met anyone, and I've met a LOT of fisherman in my life, who would ask me "which one? spinning or baitcaster" if I asked them identify an open faced reel

Such a ridiculous statement.

That's not the issue. There are three types of reels (besides fly obviously): open-faced(baitcaster), closed-faced(zebco/spincast), and spinning. The under-spin reels weren't even on the radar.

Casting in all applications except for throwing a cork or ultralight.

I either need a left handed bait caster

All my casters are left hand retrieve. I use spinning reels for anything less than 1/8 oz because I don't feel the need to spend the $$ on a casting rod/reel that can throw 1/32nd oz lures. Also...I recently picked up fly fishing so if I'm doing that every chance I get.

When I get home, I'm gonna berate my daughter for using a spin cast reel. That'll teach her. Damn Princess combo.
