Verizon upgrade eligible

I'm eligible for an upgrade today so I went over to look at what is out there.
Why are all the newest phones removing the SD card slot? I keep all of my photos and such on that SD card.
With SD card slot in mind what is my best current phone choice?

Just bought an LG G3 and it has removable SD and battery. Also on sale for $450.

The wife has the G3, and she should be a phone tester.

Wife has talked me into letting her have the upgrade. I will get her LG G3.
Got her talked out of the iPhone 6 and now the choices are:
Galaxy S6
Galaxy S6 Edge
Galaxy Note 4
HTC M9
Nexus 6
What's your picking order?
And has anyone rooted their G3?
