82.5 Million over 4 years.

That's a decent chunk of change.

His agent deserves a damn statue in front of Porcello's house. Guys like Doug Fister are licking their chops.

Since they got him this year for $12.5M, that's equivalent to 5 yrs at $95M, or $19M per season with the team, and having his services for his age 26,27,28,29 and 30 seasons, with none of the inevitable salary distractions this year.

Interesting that this story appeared yesterday:

"Report: Rick Porcello, Red Sox Agree To Table Contract Talks Until Offseason"
- Sun, Apr 5, 2015 at 11:08PM

"Rick Porcello has put his foot down. ... On Sunday, Porcello insisted those rumors will have to wait, confirming to WEEI’s Rob Bradford that he’s informed the Red Sox he doesn’t want to engage in contract talks until this season is over. “I don’??t want any distractions when we start the season,” Porcello said, via WEEI.com. “I just want to focus on pitching.” A team source confirmed to Bradford that the Red Sox agree negotiations should wait until the offseason."

Dear god. Porcello's agent is a wizard.

Jordan Zimmermann has probably fapped like ten times today seeing that figure.

Porcello can thank his youth for this deal even though he's seemingly been around forever.

has there been another pitcher in MLB history that have averaged 5.5 K per 9 and been paid $20mil?

I hope not. I would want a K% of 20% at the absolute minimum and even that is low for that money.

It has really only been recently players are making 20+ million

Seems all those huge contracts like Neagle, Hampton, K. Brown were of the 10 year 150-160 range. Only 21 players make 20+ million currently
Verlander, Cain, Tanaka, Hernadez, Kershaw, CC, Lee, Hamels and Greinke being the pitchers

I know Porcello is young and healthy, but here is nowhere near where any of the guys were. I like the idea of getting someone before they peak, but his ceiling is significantly lower than all of those guys.

Cain deal is looking bad, CC deal is bad.... Think I feel better about paying a 25 year old for what they could do rather than a 30 year old based on what they did.
