I watched a video of the Game of Thrones mod and it was great but the game by itself and expansions looks to be amazing. It looks like a combination of the sims and civilization. Saw a review where one guy's daughter caught syphilis and he married her to one of his rivals in order to give them syphilis. Another guy's sister in law kept hitting on him and he eventually took her to bed. She had his child, then he had her husband castrated then executed. Then had his wife assassinated (because she was barren). After that he legitimized his son and married his former sister-in-law.

The amount of depth seems crazy and like a ton of fun. Anyone here played it?

Paradox games rock.

I may have to look into this one...been awhile since I played one.

From one of the DLCs.

Everything they put out is great...

The exception is Hearts of Iron, where their game engine struggled with the era.

That is the best of all the paradox games.

I just can't get past the hours worth of tutorials I would have to sit through to even start having a clue how to play.

I'm doing that currently. There's a tutorial session and all I want to do is frick with one of my neighbors. Like imprison his wife or execute his heir.

Hearts of Iron 4 is coming out this year. It looks pretty damn good.

I could never get into Hearts of Iron, but really love WW2 so hoping I can get into that one.

I have put more hours into EU4 than any game ever. Just an obscene amount. CK2 and Victoria 2 are up there as well.

CK2 is definitely worth it and it is almost always on sale on Steam.

I was super intimidated by it, but grabbed it when it was on sale. Generally for me, the more complicated the game, the more I enjoy it because of the freedom it offers. This one is nuts though. However, I watched a few "lets play" youtube vids and that helped a ton. Now I can honestly say this is probably my favorite game. Its so ridiculously good.

The replay value seems to be through the roof because no one game will ever be the same.

Anyway, I'm still learning the basics. I started a normal game and was kind to my kids. Well i noticed my character's wife was getting up there in age and she didn't really like me. My character's son's wife was 22 and was getting ready to pop out some kids (My son was my heir and didn't have the greatest stats so I decided it was time for a new one). So I plotted to have my character's current wife killed. Well when that wasn't going smooth I just decided to imprison and execute her. Needless to say the next part of my plan was to imprison and execute my worthless heir and marry his wife. Unfortunately he escaped my plot and they both have -100 liking for me.

Once I get the hang of this game, I will put hundreds of hours into it.

For this sort of thing, I go to Medieval Total War 2. Simplistic strategy map, but it still gives you the feeling of conquering Europe. Helps when you can see the battles in real time. That game ruined the RTS genre for me.

MTW2 is a favorite of mine too. I actually liked MTW1 better but it has/had major issues with new NVidia cards and Creative Assembly or SEGA stopped supporting the game so I just gave up trying to get it to run. That said, if you are of fan of MTW2 I recommend giving CK2 a try. It is more political and you can't just run over the map with armies. You can only attack if you have a claim or fabricate a claim on a territory or the ruler is excommunicated. You have to play Ironman mode to get the Steam achievements. It's not for everyone but I have a lot of fun with it.

Absolutely love MTW2. But this is much more in depth and much more historically accurate (as far as mechanics of ruling). Plus you can pick from literally any of the historic rulers at any level of government that existed in Europe.

My first game I started as a tiny little Earl in Ireland and became king of a unified Gaelic Great Britain. Then I tricked the Holy Roman Emperor to let me marry his 4th in line to the throne. After some clever assassinations and scheming to delegitimize heirs I instantly became ruler of the majority of the continent. When you pull that shite off there is no better feeling in a game. Its the king of "gotcha" moments.

I don't know if I will get very far without getting assassinated. Anyone that hates me, I try to gain their favor, invite them to court then imprison them. If nobody offers me a sizable ransom, I execute them. I've had several people assassinated because of this

What are the best expansion packs for this game?

Yeah I'm actually a panderer. I rarely piss people off.

The unit packs are great if you want more unique and historically accurate units. I also love The Republic because I've always played Venice in MTW2. But the headliner "DLC" (if you want to call it that) is the Game of Thrones mod. Its unbelievably good. Almost flawless. If you're a fan of the GoT series its an absolute must have.

Medieval is good, but I am loving Attila at the moment. Good times fighting off the huns.

I play the shite out of CK2 - mainly the GOT mods. I fricking love it.
Enjoy!

Also - I see how there is a multiplayer option when you boot it up but I have never fricked with it. I imagine those games must take hours and hours.

CK2 is my most played game ever by far. Over 1200 hours (if I'm watching tv, im playing it). Most of the DLC is a must minus the sunset invasion which is stupid and doesn't fit into the game.

I have had issues recently so I haven't really played in the past year or so. They patched something and it bugged out so that it kept on crashing on me. I think it's fixed but I put too much into those to risk it. I've moved on to more in-depth games but I'll eventually return like I always do.

If you like CK2, they have games for every era that all have their own feel. CK2 is a personal narrative.

Victoria II is 1820-1920. It's very political. You spend a lot of time managing your population and economy. You don't have much of a connection with characters.

EU4 is 1450-1820 and that's the broadest and probably the most accessible. Love it but it doesn't run well on my computer

HoI3 is fun. I feel so powerful building armies and invasions are fun. But the actual battles themselves seem buggy. In my latest game, plains stopped working completely despite me having resources and while I definitely had a stacking penalty, I was losing battles that I had no business losing.
