Frequent Flyers of the OT: Spirit Airlines. Pros/Cons?

We're taking Spirit from DFW to MCO in May. We don't fly a lot and are wondering if there is a significant difference from the big airlines. TIA.

People love to shite on Spirit but it isn't bad at all IMO. I've gotten flown with them 3 times from MSY-IAH with no problems.
The main thing you need to known with Spirit is that they charge you for a carry-on but you get one free personal item.
The bag below is my personal item and fits within their regulations. It doesn't seem like Costco sales it anymore though.

In a word, yes. Make sure you research all of the fees. They charge you for stupid shite like not printing your ticket at home.

I have never flown with them, but bought a ticket from DEN to MSY later this month. Flying Frontier back. Got the ticket for less than half of what everyone else wanted. Like Frontier it is no frills, you get to bring on a personal item, such as a purse, backpack, etc. But you must pay for snacks and carry-ons. My motto, just get my butt home.

It's great for what it is. A cheap fast bus ride to various places. As long as you know what you are getting it isn't bad. They buckle and dime you for every thing because they are so cheap but there are ways around everything with them.

We're checking 2 bags for $30 a piece each way. Since our two kids each get a personal item for free, we can take two extra bags without having to pay. For a two and a half hour flight, we can survive without a $4 bag of mini pretzels.

I normally bring my own snacks on a flight anyway.
Also like someone said, print it your ticket at home. Also if you want to sit together it'll be $5-$10 more if don't have an exit row or premium seat

I live in college station and fly IAH to msy for 99 bucks round all day......they aren't known for amenities but they get the job done.
Biggest Con with them is that they only have certain flight times and days in which they make trips so if something external happened and your flight was cancelled, your fricked for 24 hrs.

It's one of the few airlines that makes SWA seem luxurious in comparison

I heard awful things about them but I've never had any issues. The tickets are so much cheaper and flying is a shitty experience on every airline so might as well go with Spirit. All the flights I've been on have been lax about the personal item policy, nobody checks to make sure its the proper size.

Flown twice with them and probably won't fly again unless I have to. Both times delayed. Cramped seating and I'm not a big guy. Uncomfortable.

Another thing to keep in mind regarding the mickle and diming:
Carry on charge is for EACH leg.
A friend saw someone bitching up a storm for that reason, they didn't feel they should be charged another 30 bucks for a same day connecting flight.

I say this in all sincerity: good luck. I made the mistake of flying Spirit to San Diego once. I saw a mother traveling with 4 kids. Each kid had a tiny backpack. The airline tried to charge her $50 per backpack, because their prices go up at the gate. She flipped her shite and eventually the cops got envolved. I think they eventually relented on the fees but it was a huge scene.

I can assure you that no frequent flyer flies spirit airline.

A FF would never put up with the shite Spirit puts you through. With that said, Spirit has it's place if you really need a cheap flight. Just make sure you know the rules going into it regarding the carry on fees.

I've never flown them, Mrs. Füt has a couple of times when her original flights were canceled or itinerary change forced her to use Spirit. She says they should have a sign to this effect as fair warning to any/all potential customers:

Flew the stepdaughter in from Houston on Spirit. They charge you for everything. If we had known ahead of time, Southwest would have been cheaper. She came in for Mardi Gras, like a typical teenager taking everything in her closet, the suitcases weighed a ton (over 50). She also had a carry-on that got charged because it could not fit under the seat.
I think her father may have studied the Spirit rules and did everything possible to trigger additional charges to her mother.
The bright side is she applied to LSU while she was here, and got accepted with TOPS because her mother pays taxes in LA. Thank goodness she will not go to A&M.
