The title caught me off guard but I have been lurking on the OT today. I thought that was normal, but I've always had well water.

Highly alkaline water will turn it black. They suggest boiling vinegar in it and scrubbing with SOS pads.

You left water in there for a very long time, that's what turned the aluminum black

Minerals in the boil. Doesn't affect the aluminum. If you don't like staining or having your pot infused with smells, use high quality stainless.

Just boil some vinegar and water or lemons and water for a while and it'll be great--until next time. Minerals in the water will do it pretty quick. Had one I thought i had ruined. Made some muscadine jelly in it (alum pot like a miniature crawfish pot)-stain GONE. I have repeated with lemons and it worked. You could also just leave it like it is.
