quote:

Less than a year ago, a text message from Johnny Manziel (and perhaps some advice from a homeless man) convinced the Browns and owner Jimmy Haslam to trade up to No. 22 and take the Texas A&M quarterback.

quote:

"I think about 90 percent [the Browns] have moved on [from Manziel] in their own minds except that they really don't know who they're going to get when Johnny leaves rehab, which has been an extended stay -- a two-month stay," ESPN's Chris Mortensen said

quote:

More from Cabot: "If [the Browns] don't land one of those two (Mariota or Bradford), I do think McCown will be their man in 2015. They are also big on Connor Shaw, who could start games for them this season if necessary. As for Manziel, they'll see what happens when he gets out of rehab soon. At this point, I don't think they can get much in a trade. Maybe Jerry Jones is still interested."

All this hype for beating Alabama in Tuscaloosa once. He's on a downward spiral.

So the Browns are pretty confident that Manziel will still suck and not be their starter but are willing to revisit the issue if he magically starts playing awesome out of rehab. Oh, and the trade market for him is a little slow.

Great reporting, Mort!

JFF makes Vince Young look like Steve Young.

At least Aggie's busts > Longhorn's busts.

If they weren't prepared to give him some serious time to develop, then holy frick they're the dumbest organization in sports. What the frick did they think was gonna happen?

Yay, Johnny has taken us to 13-3 while transitioning perfectly after a few off field issues a few months ago in college! Yay!

fricking idiots.

I hope Manziel finds happiness. One thing I've learned in the life is that money can't make an unhappy person happy.

His fall could be pretty epic unfortunately. I hate seeing people squander these opportunities. He's dumb. It's like he thinks the people he hangs out with will be there no matter what. He's about to get a reality check. I don't think he has the mental stamina to fall on his face and pick it up. He's been pretty douchey throughout his career but I kinda wanted it to work out for him. Oh well...talent alone doesn't mean shite.

He was brought up spoiled. He can't take on responsibility. Hello Ryan Leaf and Josh Hamilton. He will get into drugs and all sorts of mess. This why the Cleveland Browns are the Browns...nice one.

I wonder what's been up with the qb talent the last decade or more. Is it work ethic? Skill set? I thought Leinart, Young, Tebow, Troy Smith...I thought they would be around and at least be serviceable if not playoff winners

I expected Johnny to be a bust, but I was thinking he'd be more like Young who showed some brilliant flashes.

how do these guys (and Jamarcus) do nothing in the NFL but Connor Shaw has a spot, Shaun Hill has a spot, Mike Glennon, Brandon Weeden...

The spread offenses in college with the combination of rookie quarterbacks being thrown directly in the fire day one more often & this is what you get. History shows the transition is tough as is for quarterbacks coming out college programs who run pro style offenses but it's even harder for quarterbacks coming out of a system where all presnap thinking is done from the sidelines.

Shaun Hill is better than all of those players.

that is kind of why I think RB's will make somewhat of a comeback in the next few years.

only a few young QB's look promising right now.

You've got Peyton Manning and Tom Brady not far from being done.

Drew Brees is getting there too. :(

Carson Palmer, 35
Tony Romo, 34
Eli Manning, 34
Big Ben, 33
Phil Rivers, 33
Aaron Rodgers, 31
Jay Cutler, 31

who knows? In a few years it will Rodgers, Luck, and Big Ben as the main guys? Maybe Matt Ryan but all of the sudden Tony Gonzalez is a few years removed and Roddy White is getting old. Julio Jones can still be a stud though.

they shouldn't give up on him yet ... but they probably will ... never thought either of them would be nfl stars, but fully expected/expect young/manziel to be serviceable back ups ...

damn sure don't want to ever play him again ...
