This hybrid(I think) hit me on 4lb test yesterday. Took me almost as long to get in as a 48lb tuna. Had it gotten off, I'd be telling the story of the giant catfish that got away.

I fried up a bunch with some perch and you could barely tell the difference. They were smaller than the ones you have pictured though.
They are fun on light tackle. Nice Haul

We call em "stripes" up here. Lots of fun to catch when they're running, especially on light tackle. A two pound or bigger stripe has a lot of power on that light tackle.

My daughter was using a Zebco 33 and is was all it could do to get them in. I use a crankbait rod and they had it bent like a 5lb bass. The biggest was 3 1/2 lbs, the state record is 6lbs 12oz.
We got into the hybrids on Rayburn one year, man that was fun.

Had absolutely no idea you could eat that. Always threw them back.

Aren't they also called Rockfish up the east coast?

I have cooked white's up for many folks that thought they "Knew" they were trashy fish. Only for them to eat those words later. Damn fine table fare, right close to large mouth. Wouldn't dare throw them back. Up here on Toledo they run hard in May and you can catch 100 a day easy in the main channel

Around here "rockfish" are landlocked salt water stripers. Hybrids are a cross between salt water stripers and fresh water white bass (stripes). Not sure what they call "stripers" up in yankeeland? I think in Oklahoma, for instance, their name for "stripes" is "sandies"?

Beat me to it. That's what we call a rockfish. Small one, but still a rockfish. They get up to 70 lbs here in some of our lakes. And they do have a lot of power, too. And watch those gill plates. They'll cut you like a razor.

They have hybrids and salts in the Coosa River Chain in Alabama. Also down in Lake Martin near Auburn. Biggest one i have seen caught was 43 pounds. They all eat great. The big ones you have to cut the blood line out.

Amen to that. (I also cut the blood line out of regular stripes.) And those big rockfish have filets so big you can cut steaks out of em.

On a side note, back when I was doing taxidermy full time, those rockfish were some of the most difficult fish to mount. Their backbone is HUGE and very difficult to remove compared to other fresh water fish. Always hated to get a big rockfish, even if it did pay good. They're a PITA.

quote:That's why I doubted myself, but I've caught both before. This one had definite shape of hybrid. There are some breaks in the stripes early on. If a striper, it was the fatest one of that length I've ever seen.
