Exactly what I've been thinking while reading this thread.

I work for a private oil/gas service company so our events are great because we don't play by the same rules. we give away guns, tvs, and massive amounts of booze.

Yeah, everybody's so afraid of getting sued these days. A company I worked for in the late '80s would actually break out gloves and headgear at company crawfish boils. Drunken, semi-voluntary boxing every so often really cuts down on childish bitching.

Second thread you've started about this. You're really letting this company event eat at you. Stop being a pussy, go, be social for a little bit, and leave.

As I work for the school board, we never have any of these types of events. However, I am often invited to go to oil field related golf tournaments as a guest player. Those are fun as hell: free booze, good food, good prizes.

I like the people I work with, but I get two days a week to not think about work, to get errands I need done, and to spend time with my out of state SO who only comes home those two days per week.

I'm new enough to where I'd still attend, but I wouldn't say I "enjoy" doing that on a weekend.

My company knows how to party. Already have a beer fridge at work and people who are pretty fun. I have had a great time at their christmas party. Open bar, good food, and a Band all made it a really enjoyable experience.

No. I'm good friends with most of the people I work with and I see them plenty outside of work (we play golf, hang out, go drinking, etc.). I don't need the company forcing us to spend even more time together. We have two company events every year: Christmas party and some sort of activity in the summer (picnic, baseball game, stuff like that). The Christmas party is a big deal, full bar, dinner, white elephant gifts, DJ, dancing and all that. It's horrible. The summer thing is fine except that they do it on a weekend. I don't like giving up a Saturday to go hang out with the guys I work with some more. If they gave us a day off during the week, I might feel differently about it.

We have several different things throughout the year but for the most part, no I don't like going to them. The Golf tournament last year was a real clusterfrick.

+1 generally speaking I enjoy ours.

1. I like my coworkers (there's always gonna be a couple idiots though)
2. I enjoy good free food
3. I enjoy good free beer & alcohol
Last night in Chicago I drank a solid stout, a solid ipa & had a 4-course meal for free

Good answers.

So if a co worker said he didn't want to go, would you be offended

absolutely not, in fact there are usually at least 10% or so who can't make it. This is based on a variety of different things, but some need to immediately catch up on work, have other things going on, want to get back to hotel and rest, etc.

I went to a corp event for my national company back up in DC, 11,000 employees...

It. Was. Awesome.

Everyone blew off the agenda and spent three days hammered drunk.

Eta: 9/10...Would go again.
