Outside of very particular circumstances, no I don't believe it's a disability.

Horrible way to measure weight problems.

It's not a disability, it's an ability: an ability to eat way too much and exercise way too little.

As I look at this I agree. I could lose 50 more pounds and still be in the "normal" range.

At 5'10" I would be normal at 130 pounds and mildly thin at 120. Seriously?

By itself it is not a true disability. I would be pissed if someone starts collecting disability checks because they couldn't put down the cake and cookies.

But some people who are legit disabled are also obese...so what do you do then?

BMI doesn't measure weight

He was almost correct, but still off by 1%.

Obesity is simple to cause, simple to fix, and sadly simple to blame on something other than reality in this country.

You become obese when calories consumed exceeds calories expended over time. You repair obesity by expending more calories than you consume.

PERIOD

END OF STORY

NO OTHER EXPLANATION IS AS CLEAN AND SIMPLE OR CORRRECT.

It works for large populations, and even most individuals.

It was created by a Belgian mathematician over 200 years ago.

It does NOT take into account bone density, waist size, muscle, and has other non-logic based components.

Why would you square height? Why 703? Heck, the diet and size of humans even 200 years ago does not translate to today.

Bmi is a joke. It does not take into account body type, musculature, etc.

Thanks for catching that, I forgot to put problems or issues ha.

I'm not gonna lie and say I'm a tad pudgy, but you can see the top set of my abs and the muscle line that goes through the belly button, but BMI considers me obese.

All of these traits, in the average person in the general population, are not significant enough to skew it one way or another.

uhh that's why there is a range where you are considered normal weight and not a hard and fast single number

BMI takes into account your height

but you're right about diet. We leave in a time where fatties have unlimited amounts of food available to them and display no discipline or self control whatsoever. While kids starve in the 3rd world, our fatties complain about "muh genetics" or "muh condishuns"

I guess we could placard their chairs with "wideload by choice" and wheel them over to the salad bar

Sounds like you have a lot of visceral fat, the most dangerous kind.

Have you actually seen the formula? It for some reason squares height, so the taller you are, the far less you are punished for weight.

1/2 =.5, 2/4 = .5, 4/16 = .25, 8/256 = .03125

yea I've seen the formula and I recognize the limitations in BMI

it's still a solid tool and a good guideline

but most people who complain about how it doesn't take into account bodyfat% are still fat

And plenty of people who fall into an acceptable bmi are fat.
