Legislative session starts April 13. People who love LSU need to pay attention.

It is easily the most important session in history as it concerns the future of LSU. Pay attention. Make some noise.

Btw, Robert Mann rips the Board of Supervisors a new one. They're all Jindal puppets with their heads so far up Piyush's arse that they have no idea what is really happening.

BOS should resign.

I'm not a fan of Jindal, but I always disregard everything someone says once I read/hear that being used.

Kind of like "Hussein" when talking about our useless President, or "ALEC", "Koch Brothers", "Agenda 21"... all buzz words to stop paying attention to that person's opinion.

While I love my Alma Mater, it doesn't mean I have to blindly support it. I've heard LSU is getting hit with anywhere between 40% and 80% budget cuts from state funding. State funding makes up 13% of LSU's budget. If LSU has to shut down ans cancel all their classes over a 7-10% budget cut, then they are doing it wrong. Sorry.

Its called Louisiana State University. The reason for its existence is education. If LSU's budget is so bloated with bullshite that a 10% cut will tragically affect the university's ability to provide education for its students, then the university needs to re-examine its mission.

Or it could be a bunch of hyperbole. Plus, I'm willing to bet the other state colleges rely on a whole lot more funding from the state than just 13%.

I agree but nothing will change. The people who are in office wont go along with any tax increase and that is what's needed. Somebody will need to make the hard decision to increase taxes. No one wants to hear that but its the truth.

Or the decision to shut down (or privatize) some of the underperforming public universities around the state.

Why is that the truth? Have any audits been done to assess the efficiency in the use of money and state schools? Why should the taxpayers be on the hook just so LSU & Co can continue to exist at the lifestyle they are accustomed to?

Exactly, anytime a public institution is faced with budget cuts the hyperbole starts. Cities are forced to lay off policemen and firemen all the time, never functionaries or low level bureaucrats.

The answer is never wiser use of less money, it is always slash what the public wants.

Do you people really believe that we should operate our flagship university like a no-frills airline? Is that what you want for your school? If you believe that "LSU's budget is so bloated with bullshite" you are deluded. It has already been cut to the bone, and I invite you to compare LSU's budget with that of its SEC peers. While higher education is in trouble nationally, nobody -- NOBODY -- has had to endure the economic gutting that LSU has under Jindal.

I'm not talking about just schools. I'm talking about the whole budget deficit. We will need to raise taxes to get us out of this hole. Jindal has cut just about everything he could cut to keep the state government moving. The next governor has to bring revenue increases to the table.

I just read an article stating Louisiana doesn't have enough money to pay for the presidential primaries next year.

You better get your hipster self back to the beer threads before you get accused of being racist or wanting to restrict people's right to attend a 4 year university in their own backyard.

Do you really believe that LSU's lifestyle is that lavish? Newsflash: Taxpayers are always on the hook for public education. It's part of the bargain that we make as a society.

The can will be kicked down the road just like it always is.

What needs to be done won't be done and I'll see you back here again next year.

Well, until the state changes how they base their budget on a cyclical thing such as the price of a barrel of oil....the budget, and the state, will forever be fricked.

No we don't. There's enough useless underperforming universities in Louisiana that need to be shut down and that would close this deficit.

That's like your opinion man.

When you look around and see public officials driving around in brand new $60,000 full size 4x4 suv's with one person inside at around 15 MPG it gets hard to believe the state is having a budget crisis. Governments need to align themselves with budget reality.

To be honest, one of the first things they need to take up this session is to change the state constitution that will allow the governor to cut other public servies outside of higher education and health care. It's stupid to me that those are the only two areas the governor is allow to touch during times of hardship. All services using public funds should be at the governor's disposal.
