is it the number of rounds put through or just the age of it that would dictate it?
If it goes to the range and fires at all - it gets a boresnake and a wipedown. Now, I am pretty good about cleaning it up/lube before it goes to the range.
However, long term safe queens and whatnot - every once in a blue moon - often they go years and that is bad.

Difference in people who treat their tools with care and count on them to function reliably for decades vs those that don't. Carbon fouling is abrasive, why anyone wouldn't keep it to a minimum doesn't make sense.

I clean mine after every range trip only because i rarely shoot. If they're gonna be stored the majority of the year, i want them stored clean

That's another issue. Even though modern smokeless powder doesn't produce anywhere near the level of hygroscopic and corrosive byproducts they still produce some products that, when combined with metal residues and ambient humidity, you don't hanging around in the barrel for weeks or months.
Shotgun - when it stops ejecting
Bedside Pistol - maybe once every two years ? I need to run it more
Cary - Every month or so
Rifle - My baby, every time I take it out
.22 Rifle - I think it became "self cleaning"

Rifles = after every range trip
Pistols = once a year
Shotguns = never

Rifles after every shoot. Shotguns and pistols get a little more work in. Especially my shotguns. They will go a goo while without a cleaning.

I clean my Auto-5s after any range trip. Something therapeutic about sitting on the deck outside and breaking them down to clean them.
My handguns, I haven't cleaned in years. I don't shoot them all that much, or rather I should say I don't shoot any one of them all that much. But I take a boresnake to them at the range before loading my carry ammo back in them. I can't remember what year it was the last time I stripped my XD and cleaned it.

I'm border line OCD. So I clean every time I get back from hunting or shooting clays.

By this logic, I suppose you never change the oil in your truck? Your truck is a tool, no? Not something that should be maintained for peak performance right?

If it's a gun that will sit in the safe for a long periods of time like the 7mag, then I clean it before I store it.
1911- every single time I shoot it I clean it. It only takes about 5-7 mins to clean it so why not?
Glocks, maybe once a year and that's with less than 1000 rds.
Shotguns - at the end of hunting season and maybe a few times in between with a complete strip. Spray CLP inside the action and run a snake after every hunt and wipe the outside down with CLP.

good one lol... im not sayin i dont clean them. but once every 5-6 years. i dont clean every time i use it or even every season. Unles they get rained on then i do... other than that i may clean every 5 yrs or so. some have never been cleaned. With that said i take care of my guns and all look like new. I dont abuse them

Do you change it every time you drive it? I don't, I change it on a schedule, unless it's going to be put up for a while.
