They want us to watch out for them, which means they do not need to watch out for us.

No, you chose to be stupid and play in traffic. Play stupid games, am I right?

He was my age (mid to late 40's) based on my observation. The other cars saw him trying to clear the intersection and were waiting. I didn't see him because the other cars had him blocked from my sight. The idea of hitting a pedestrian or cyclist is so scary. I was pretty damned freaked out.

stupid and play in traffic

How is doing something that is perfectly legal "playing in traffic"? The roads I ride on are 30 mph. I'm doing roughly 10 below the speed limit and you have plenty of room to pass me. If you get close to me, you are doing it on purpose. You can safely pass me without slowing below the speed limit and never have to leave your lane (these are designated "share the road" places that are built with cyclists in mind).

I'd never ride somewhere where I really thought I was a pain in the arse to traffic. I've never had traffic build up behind me. And the only problems I've had are idiots who feel the need to honk the horn or get as close to me as they can because they feel like putting someone's life in danger because they think the road is for cars only.

Like I said, I lived on river road in Baton Rouge. I think people who ride there are idiots. Some roads are not safe for cyclists and are annoying to cars. Other can be perfectly safe without disrupting traffic.

A very popular trail is in my backyard. I go for walks/jogs on it with my wife. It is pretty much looks like a road (has broken yellow line to map out the lanes) but is smaller. The etiquette is for bikers to yell out "on your left" so that you know they are going to be passing you. Many dumbasses think that by saying that, that I should have to get over even further in my lane instead of him having to get into the other lane (like you would pass if you were in a car). If you can't pass in the other lane, then you hit the brakes and pass when it is clear you idiots!

I have had multiple times that they fly by me intentionally close to me. They feel that drivers need to respect them on the road but that pedestrians need to also give them the right of way. I like biking myself, but the "hardcore" guys are idiots that will end up hurting themselves and most likely others because of their entitlement attitude.

There's a popular country road cyclists use around the corner from my land that cuts through the National Forest. For the most part, they yield to cars passing by but the shite they wear makes them blend in with the scenery. You'd think they'd wear something that stands out better to keep from being run over by cousin Leroy's F-350 barreling down the road.

I would expect most here would hate cyclists. Get in the way of their F250s and probably voted for Obama with those outfits they wear.

I cycle about 4-5 day's a week, but thankfully we have a lake nearby that's 10 miles (around), so I just go there. Too much can happen on the road, and it's not always the person driving the cars fault.

I hate those people, out here there are millions of them. Half of them don't obey traffic rules at all. Can't tell you how many times I have seen bikers run red lights and stop signs without even slowing down, probably once a day. Lucky for them the speed limit in my city is only 25mph.

I see this a lot on the trails out here. I stay to the side but I am not jumping off the pavement. I saw a young jogger get hit really hard from behind by a bicyclist last year on the trail near my house. She ended up getting a concussion. It could have been a lot worse.

The cyclist mentality seems to be that "I have the right of way all the time". They want the privileges of a motorized, tax revenue generating vehicle but the responsibility of a pedestrian. Most are our there hogging lane capacity for recreation and exercise, not transportation.

After seeing (and being a part of) bicycle accidents, I do think that cyclists should be required to carry some amount of insurance if their homeowners policy doesn't protect them. They can really do serious damage to pedestrians and private property alike.

Seems it's legal here in Virginia for a cyclist to pass a car on the right

If he's in a bike lane that's correct. Besides, where else do you want him to be, in the middle of the lane holding up traffic? In many urban areas it is illegal for bikes to ride on sidewalks.

But it really doesn't matter much, you still should have seen him and not cut him off whether he has a legal right to be there or not. If you didn't know he was there then that's your responsibility.

ETA: And he had a responsbility to not assume you had seen him as well, it does go both ways.
