Building a cannon... Progress Update pg. 2

A fake one obviously...
I have a relative who lives on a big hill and the other day they were saying how they wanted a cannon to set up in the yard pointing down the hill towards the front fence. They found a big one at a junk store, but it was over $500. The more I thought about it, I think I can make one... I KNOW I can make one.
I'm thinking... one of these on its side for the base and wheels.
With a rounded wooden fence corner post as the barrel. Then drill a baseball sized hole in the end a foot or so deep.
I'm not sure how to fasten it yet, but I am thinking about a 2x4 or 4x4 support system permanently attached to the spool. That however immobilizes it.
Once done I'll either stain it dark or paint it all black and add some metal rivets and straps to it for looks purposes.
I'm hoping for something along these lines on a life size scale.
This idea is preliminary so all ideas are welcome. If this comes to fruition, I'll post updates on here of the progress.

Telephone pole for the barrel.
Also, you have too much time on your hands.

A telephone pole would be great but that may be a little more length than I need. You can get the wooden corner post up to a 12" diameter or more and they are only 8 foot long.

I have too many unfinished projects technically.

cut a telephone pole down, or just steal one from fort humbug.

I got my spool and "cannon" this afternoon. It's just propped up in the pic, but you get the idea. Now I just need to build a counterbalance, paint it all black and trim it out with some rope and brass buttons or something.

That one looks really nice but it looks a little pricey too. I got $65 in this one so far.
Granted, mine is going to look rough, but being a 1/8th of a mile off the road it'll look like a BIG cannon to passing cars.

Looks like what the Confederates built at Fort Humbug to scare the Yankees back down the Red River.

Is that the one on the corner of Youree and Stoner by the VA?
If so, that was part of my inspiration...

That's the spot. CSA lined up hundreds of those fake cannons up and down the river. Union scouts saw how "well" defended Shreveport was (state capital at the time) and decided to turn turn tail and head back south.

FYI...I just saw a metal cannon mounted on wagon wheels for sale at a roadside antique/junk store just South of Bethany, on Hwy 79 between Greenwood and Carthage.

KCS Antiques on the North side of the road?
That's the $500 one I mentioned in the OP. I've been on cannon watch for a month or two now. That's why I finally decided to build my own.
Fwiw, that one has a wooden barrel too... I thought it was metal from the road until we stopped to look at it. I keep my cows very close to there, so I'm in that area a lot.

Thats pretty cool.
I remember being mesmerized as a kid by that tank on the corner.

I live about 200 yards from former judge and attorney, Angelo Piazza. He has real cannons and fires them about twice a month. Those bitches rock. My windows shake. Looks like a cool project. Is it going to be a yard ornament?

Yeah, it's just for looks. After looking at it, I may just paint the barrel black and leave the wheels with the wooden look for contrast.
Then I may wrap some rope like this around the barrel. I'm thinking 3 wraps spaced out.
This is my rough sketch for the rope idea...

This one?

That's the one. He also has his cannons at the Marksville High football games and fires them when they score. Sorry Clyde for the semi-hijack.

I need the bumps... my thread has been failing miserably.
I thought a lot more folks would find my project interesting.

Clyde you should paint some spokes on the wheels or something
Just do a couple of runs of wide tape to simulate the spokes, spray black, peel tape and you have brown spokes with black trimming for background
