Help, some stupid ad will not go away on IE browser

Some alert has hijacked my IE browser. Won't let me exit out or close it. Says I have to call some number at Microsoft to get rid of virus. I know it's bogus and when I run a scan it says no viruses....yet still has IE on lockdown. I tried googling virus remover software and downloading it or downloading another browser...but it will not let me download anything.
I'm soooooo not tech savvy when it comes to computers and am tempted to just take it somewhere and pay whatever for them to fix it. Any quick fixes before I go that route? Thanks for any replies.

I know this is not directly related to your question and I hope someone answers it so that you can get over this issue, but.......IE browser? Really? Why wouldn't you use something like Chrome or Firefox? I can't believe someone savvy enough to buy a Microsoft Band would use IE as their main browser. IE is so horrible and has been for years that even MS has now killed it. They are coming out with a brand new browser for Windows 10. MS can't run away from IE and Windows 8 fast enough.

you sound just like my husband
He mocks me for my IE usage as well. Guess I'm just used to it.
If I can get this pesky thing off my computer I'll try another browser ok? That satisfy you?

It should be a little gear on the top right.
click that then manage add-ons.

Welcome to the real world, where conferencing systems, timesheets and internal programs only work on IE..
To the OP, restart in safe mode and run a virus scan..

Ok....got into safe mode....gonna try a system restore from last update(which was last week). Let's see if this works.
Posted on 3/30/15 at 2:56 pm to lsunurse
I'm not sure if its even in Windows 8, but in 7 and earlier there was a "No Add-on" mode or something similar for IE under accessories. I'll reboot into bootcamp and see if i can find it, but I have Windows 10, so it might be different.

LINK
Check this link out, it will show you how.
I would boot into safe mode with networking and then download malwarebytes. Run it in safe mode and once you are done restart and run it in regular Windows. Don't start up IE in the meantime.
These viruses affect all browsers and I have gotten them a couple times with firefox/chrome, so don't feel bad. this has fixed it every time.
Also...stop looking at midget porn!!

Yep, I use IE only for stuff at work that don't work on anything else; i.e only when there is no alternative.
But reading the OP did it sound like the lsunurse was using it for work related stuff? It sounded to me like she was having issues on her personal home computer. My point is no one should be using IE as their main browser at home. It is an atrocious application that nobody has to suffer through without a good reason. IE is only good for one thing: Using it to download a better web browser.

Um not what I suggested...I would NEVER recommend a system restore...
Viruses/malware do not just "go away" when you revert back..The drive does not magically erase what is already done..
You need to run a scan and delete whatever is there..Then, reset all your browser settings to default..

So will system restore do anything to help this? Cause now that I've already selected it.....doesn't appear that I can stop it. Did I just make things worse??
I read on some article to try that, only reason I clicked on it fwiw.

Well crap, how long does that take to finish?
So once it stops....do i still have to get back to safe mode to scan again?
