What's untrue about that? Read any thread on this topic and it sticks out like a sore thumb. There's no logical reasoning behind laughing at people losing their jobs. It's funny to say "look at there Jim Bob selling his jacked up F250" because he lost his job?
I'd love to get a survey going of what other people in here drive and the cost of those vehicles. People on this site have a hatred for O&G guys, especially ones that work out in the field. The insecurity oozes from their posts.

Takes more than just doing CAD classes to become a Piping Designer. You will start as a draftsman first just doing pick up work, but if you have ambition it doesn't take incredibly long to get your pay over 30 bucks an hour.

Piping designer 1 means you can actually design, CAD classes give you 0 experience designing. A pipe designer 1 has to have experience as a draftsman first.

Oil was this low in 2009 and by 2011 it was back over $100/barrel. Cyclical like everything else.

Maybe it's the stereotype of many oil field workers, lots bring the mockery upon themselves. Many live paycheck to paycheck, live like rockstars and when layoffs happen they cry a river. Many O&G guys are quick to boast their income and lack of education to those who were "duped" in getting a college education.
But you're right, I'm jealous and wish I was them.

Yes we pay a gas tax, but that doesn't even come close to recouping the subisidies that the government gives to the Oil & GAs industry via special tax breaks and deregulation of externalities (Jindal said explicitly that the taxpayers should pay 100% of the cost of coastal restoration and the oil companies not a penny - just to name one externality. That's some good free market economics there, Mr Conservative).
Of course the consumers have benefited in the short term from the massive subsidies. But it has also skewed the market price, retarding the research and development of alternate energy, as alternates are less financially rewarding than it would be were oil and gas not subsidized.
I will also point out that Texas has far more social programs, broader social programs and much better funded social programs than does Louisiana.

No, you didn't single me out.
But as the only male in my family not in O&G, I know the people quite well and not all are stereotypical. My father retired for Shell after 35 years, so I have no ill will towards O&G workers.

Oil field workers are basically the same guys who were getting overpaid to build cars in a union up in 1960's Detroit. They are people who are basically uncompetitive in a global sense, so they rely on a task that cannot be outsourced to make a good living.
I agree with you their lifestyle, or their justification of a lack of education, is often ridiculous. But I would rather have these people working, rather than what happens to the same worker in 2015's Detriot (namely living off entitlements).

You make it sound like they are scum. The truth is, education isn't for everyone. As the old saying goes, "The world needs ditchdiggers, too." Truth is, though, that the manufacturing industry has a dearth of young, skilled workers, so if someone wants to go into a fairly stable field and make roughly $100k by the time he or she is 25 to 27 years old, he or she can go get an associates degree or other vocational training and be working with robotic and other heavy machinery manufacturing while his or her friends are busy accumulating debt.

I don't think those numbers would be impacted much in December and January
