I dont understand why it pisses some people off that oilfield workers make good money and have nice things. Its like yall are rooting for them to go broke and lose everything

Jealousy and insecurity. Some people can't comprehend how people without degrees can make so much money. I have a good friend that's been like this his whole life. He gets angry because we have degreeless friends that make 3 times what he makes and they work in O&G. He works in journalism. My field pays well, but not nearly what some of my O&G friends make, and I hold multiple degrees. I understand the nature of their work though, and some career paths just don't pay as much.

They're intimidated because they're not the smartest people in the room. O&G workers are.

Oates nailed it! We to have friends with only hs educations who are killing it. I often hear friends with degrees cutting them down for no reasons but jealously. I for one am happy for them and respect the dedication because most of them spend half their lives off shore. If your from the gulf coast and don't work in O&G I can't imagine how this situation can make you happy. I surely don't enjoy seeing people being layed off, having to sell off their belongings, or struggling period. Oh and someone pointed out CEO salaries... Really?! Geez

Pretty sure everyone likes cheap gas.

It really stands out here because most posters have degrees and probably make significantly less than your average say....directional driller so they do what they can to make themselves feel better.

He should have said, "drilling is the first to go." Companies drill wells, then have production personnel complete said wells and monitor production, working over older wells if needed to increase production, or intervening to fix wells that have stopped producing.

Once there are no wells being drilled, it's only a matter of time until there are no wells for production staff complete.

If workovers aren't worth it at the given price, then production staff are not needed there either.

Production maintenence is cheaper than workovers and usually has higher incremental production. shite has to be really bad for a company not to care even about maintaining production.

So it's very feasible to lay off production staff. On deepwater platforms i don't think that would be as big if a fear, however.

Because I think oil industry affects your job one way or another. Unless you are a paralegal like stated earlier.

Definitely. Everyone acts like the oil field doesn't affect them. It affects almost everyone on the Gulf Coast. If you bag groceries it affects you. Less people out earning money means less money spent in the local economy across the board. A waiter is a good example, because if people aren't working they sure as hell aren't eating out and tipping well.

I have a friend that's in drilling. They are only getting 13k a day for the rig. I don't see how they can operate a deepwater rig on that budget safely.

Try to tell people that the government makes more per gallon of gas with their taxes, than the oil company does and they look at you like you just arrived from another galaxy.

Not even getting into Corporate taxes and severance, you pay, in Louisiana of course, around 38.5 cents a gallon in pure excise taxes.

Either he's not on a deepwater rig, or he/you misunderstood something about the day rate.. That would be like 3% of the day rate of a deepwater rig when oil prices were high

I don't think people are rooting against you as much as people see the idiots in your profession that constantly splurge like drunken sailors. It's frustrating to see that, and then hear industry types moaning and groaning about being laid off when in the good times they should have been planning for it instead of making idiotic purchases.

Your friend should be pissed off at his poor choice in majors and career field.

That's why I said, jealousy and insecurity. Before I finished my degrees, he was always mad that I made more money than he did, even though I had established myself in that particular career field. Then after I jumped two degrees beyond him, he focused that anger on our O&G friends. I love him to death, but he's definitely mad that he chose a career path that doesn't pay well.

Well either you misheard him or he doesn't know what he is talking about, I can promise you its not 13k, maybe 130k which is still on the low side depending on what type of rig it is.

And that article posted earlier, San Antonio is diff going to feel it, especially more than Houston is Houston notices it at all.

I never really thought of san antonio as an oil town. Hardly any oil companies have offices there. Yeah, there are service companies that work the eagle ford, but that seems like a small amount compared to the population. They are one of the 10 most populous cities in the countrt.

Should of worded that differently but the eagleford has brought a ton of growth there and as you said a lot of service industry. I could be wrong but I see them taking a bigger hit from this than Houston.

Texas will do more than survive. It will still grow.

The states that are in a bad way right now are Wyoming and North Dakota. Particularly North Dakota.
