As a belated fan of Wes Anderson I recently watched Moonrise Kingdom. Of the 3-4 films of his I've seen to date this was easily the least entertaining or impressive for me.

Where does it rank for the MTV board? What is widely considered to be WA's best film?

My favorite thus far was his latest - The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Absolutely hated it the first time I watched. Loved it the second time. One of the rare films where that's happened to me.

I really liked Moonrise Kingdom, it is at or near the top for me. The Grand Budapest Hotel is one of my favorite 3-4 of his as well.

Most Wes Anderson films take at least a couple viewings for me to formulate a definitive opinion. I like Moonrise Kingdom alright, but it's never really grown on me.

My personal favorite is The Life Aquatic, but I've been scoffed at by friends for that opinion.

The Royal Tenenbaums is usually the Wes Anderson go-to for my friends who don't care for The Life Aquatic. I don't really care for it, but I feel like his films divide opinions like that.

I dated a girl who didn't like either, but likes Rushmore and Grand Budapest. My sister claims to not like Wes Anderson, but she thinks Fantastic Mr. Fox is awesome.

I thought it was a cute little story. It's better than a lot of stuff that's out there. It's not particularly high though compared to his other stuff though imo. General consensus seems to put Royal Tenembaums and Rushmore at the top. It might be Grand Budapest Hotel for me. Life Aquatic also seems to get a lot of love. I thought Life Aquatic was really boring the time I saw it, but that was a really long time ago. I should probably rewatch it.

I tried watching and ended up turning it off... Was extremely boring to me. I need to go back and try again.

But yes

Moonrise Kingdom

It was an odd film. I saw it in the theater and had mixed feelings. But upon second watching at home it grew on me.

For some reason, though, the beach scene kind of creeped me out when I thought about Anderson directing it.

I'm partial to Bottle Rocket since it was his first.

Royal is my favorite overall.

I couldn't even finish Moonrise and don't like the Darjeeling Limited.

rushmore is my fav and i love royal

really like bottle rocket and i've warmed up to life aquatic

i hate, HATE darjeeng. it's pretentious, boring, and enraging to me

i used to love WA then i grew apathetic-negative towards him but i had a really fun time with budapest. it was just completely engaging to me

he just is a guy addicted to his style, for better or worse. with budapest he seemed to put more into the story and it worked

Yeah his style burned me out starting with Life Aquatic. Budapest was better like you said.

It's been a long time since I watched The Royal Tenenbaums, but I don't remember it being dripping with that style.

royal is where it really started. he had some "play/book" setting in rushmore, but the movie was shot traditionally

royal is where he really just framed everything as a play, with his color schemes, and when that became popular, he ran with it

Probably my favorite WA movie. I was in the boy scouts and remember being that socially awkward adolescent away at camp, so the movie speaks to me. The way all of the kids are so over the top serious just cracks me up for whatever reason, and the quartermaster scout steals every scene he's in.

Anderson's films get better with each viewing because you're able to shift focus from the main characters in each scene to some of the background imagery and action. He'll have supporting characters sticking their heads into shots at the last moment, or shouting something odd during a scene.
