I spent a year in Nam (69-70) and it pains me to admit that I didn't realize Congress had passed legislation authorizing the observance until I read this thread.

Well I'll go ahead and be 'that guy'.

[thatguy]My father was actually discharged from the Navy Reserve so that the Army could draft him into the Korean war. He never recognized any Veterans Day outside of November 11th, which he still called Armistice Day, and never was thanked for his service.

Nobody has forgotten Vietnam, but the Korean war is known as the Forgotten war. The thing is men of his generation just shrugged it off and kept going. There's something about the Baby Boomers that doesn't let them do that.

WildTc,your dad was a brave patriot. The difference between the Korean Vet and the Nam Vet is that the Nam Vet was treated with outright hatred and held to blame upon return to CONUS.I had a very hard time being accepted because I was a Nam Vet.
Once while apply for a job, I was asked what drugs was I using.I answered none. The response was that I had to be on drugs because all Nam Vets were.
I'll bet the Korean Vet was never told not to ware his uniform in public;I was.
But maybe I'm just a cry Baby Boomer.

Korea had come right after WWII and a clear great victory. Just five years later under United Nations banner here it goes again. America was tired of war and this one had the indignity to end in a truce. So it was swept away in the American conscience.
The fighting man of the United States did as he always did, fought well, sacrificed and in some circumstances died. Men like your father no matter what the circumstances will always be remembered.

Thank you all for your service. The treatment you received from the trashy segment of our population upon your return is unforgivable and without a doubt the lowest period in American history.

Three tours 1967 thru 1970 with Seabees, proud then and proud now....MBA from LSU in 75...just as proud. We held our heads high when we left and when we came home-those of us that did. Make no mistake about it.....we were and are Americans.

As the song says "all gave some Some gave all". Those who served will never forget those who gave all.

1. Wrong board
2. You're an attention whore
3. Is there actually a "Vietnam" Veterns day? Regular Veterans Day was not enough?
4. I'll fly my flag on real Veterans Day out of respect for those who sacrificed for our country regardless in which war they fought.
5. I'm sure I'll get a zillion down votes from Pavlov's monkeys, but ask yourselves this: are you ready for...

World War 1 Veterans Day
World War 2 Veterans Day
War of 1812 Veterans Day
Spanish American War Veterans Day
Etc.?

Hell, for all I know these might already exist.
