Crawfish were $1.97/lb in Houston by the sack. Felt like such a good deal we did 30 lb sack for 4 ppl (my wife as one of them) and we nearly finished.

So how many hours did it take you to accumulate your catch?

I don't mind the price of crawfish, those guys are just making a living like anyone else. Props to you for getting them on your own. I can say I haven't done the same, but don't get pissed because a guy farms crawfish for a living and charges market price.

Don't forget insurance, wear and tear on gear, lease payments, mortgages, property tax and etc.

I bought em for 3.75 lb yesterday, but they were clean, nice sized, perfect shells......and I drank beer under my patio listening to music.

I like to joke about the crawfish folks, but unless you know somewhere to go get em, what else you gonna do? It isn't like they are a necessity? Well they may be, you can buy em on the food stamps

BS

Rice field covers all that. Crawfish is by product in a way without all the work rice needs. Rice costs no where near 3.75 a pound.

Crawfish boats, percentage going to land owner, pumping costs, sacks, bait, that doesn't cost anything?

Btw have you seen the price of ice lately? It ain't covering much of anything hoss.

I still say BS. They know people will pay whatever for a sack. Todays people spend and keep up with Jones more than ever. Crawfish boils have become a bigger social event now than it ever has. I bet the markup and profit is higher than the other products they farm.

Same class as the big oil companies. If I am wrong then show me the details on markup/profit and I will understand

Really bad comparison.

This is coming from someone who grew up in the seafood industry and worked it 15 years. I've worked in finance for major oil companies the last 4 years and it's not even close. There is so much more money In oil.

Profits aren't as high as some people think in the seafood industry. I also ran a seafood market for 2 years and we worked on $.25-$.50/lb for live and a little more for boiled. There is a lot of costs in boiling them that the average consumer doesn't factor in.

The markup comes from the wholesale to your table. Without any doubt.

Sounds like you work for free and believe that anyone should make a profit from their business.

1.Sometimes I feel like it...2.correct

I just don't believe in artificial inflation of prices...that's why I chose to catch my own...

the market in this case isn't allowed to correct itself either...you'd be crying foul if some other commodity went exorbitantly high through price fixing or collusion. everyone would be demanding an investigation.

Only in America can we be held hostage by unions and farmers.
