Joe Namath was a very, very overrated quarterback in the 60's and 70's...

true or false?

Threw 47 more interceptions than touchdowns
Lead the league in interceptions 4 times
Career completion % of 50.1
Career passer rating of 65.5
Playoff record of 2-1
Super Bowl win
More interceptions than touchdowns in playoffs
Playoff passer rating of 54.8 in playoffs
Multiple games of 5 + interceptions (7 and may be more)
Games of 6 + interceptions (2 and may be more)

Does Broadway Joe's Super Bowl "guarantee" make him appear like a better player than he actually was? Does his personality do the same? I realize the game was played differently back then, but those stats are atrocious and the Super Bowl win is his only claim to fame. NFL Network got me thinking by naming him the #3 all time player that wore #12.

What do you think?

We should push to get Trent Dilfer in the HOF.

Joe Namath also had an all-time losing record as a starting quarterback.

I thought this was just assumed by anyone that even remotely looked at his stats.

It's tough to throw out completion percentages, yards, and TD vs INT numbers from that era and compare it to now when judging a QB. However, your statement gives a real clue.

Bart Starr, Len Dawsom, Johnny U, Bob Gresie, Frank Tarkenton...all FAR greater QBs in the same 60s-early 70's era that Namath played in.

Agreed, and I mentioned something about the era.

Again, agreed.

I don't understand how Joe Namath is in the Hall of Fame.

Did you ever see him play? Are you old enough to have watched the NFL in that era?

I would hope the top 2 players to wear #12 are the 2 #12's that have won 4 Super Bowls.

He had a great arm and release. He played in a different era with different rules. Buy yes, he's overrated.

Thankfully, no. I have seen some games and highlights.

The overwhelming statistics that aren't in his favor formed my opinion for me.

They're kidding to have Namath over Staubach, right?
