A private citizen spent their own money to buy a publicly available good, and now the school is telling a kid he can't wear something that i doubt is prohibited by the dress code.

Yep. Its not like the school is just handing these out. A mother did this for her son. There was a kid in my high school who wore his older brother's football letter jacket but he didn't even play football. He was a douchebag. Everyone knew he was a douchebag. Yet he wasn't violating a dress code and the school didn't do anything about it because at the end of the day it was a fricking letter on a fricking jacket.

Some mother did this for her special needs son. People need to stop the "Everybody gets a trophy" comparisons.

No you wouldn't but I'll pretend you would to satisfy your need to feel magnaminous. So forget what I just said and read on.

The world needs more people like you! If everyone was like you the world would be a much better place!

If the school had any kind of sack, they'd extend letters to the special needs kids participating in sports and tell psycho soccer mom to frick off.

ETA: I say this as someone who varsity lettered in HS in two sports and saw a Down syndrome student earn a letter in varsity football as a substitute place kicker. It didn't lessen my accomplishments at all, nor did me or my family lose their shite over it.

your inability to see past a spelling error that was caused by my phone's auto-correct and your name-calling is shattering my world right now. my opinion must have triggered you.

as for everyone else, thanks for giving your thoughts on why you oppose my ideas without going ballistic.

I agree with this. It isn't about giving a letter to every kid.....it's about givine one to THIS kid.

My biggest problem is they chirp about treating special needs kids like everyone else then want special treatment for their kids. I'm fine with giving him a letter but you can't have it both ways.

But that's not really what happened in this case. In this case, the mother of the kid bought him a letter jacket, and the school told him he couldn't wear it. She didn't ask the school to give him one.

And unless the school expressly forbids anyone from wearing a non-school awarded letter jacket, which is highly unlikely, they really have no reason to take it from him.

Couldn't help but notice good grades and intelligence still mattered. Just seems like the article is just trying to debunk the "dumb jock" stereotype. Theres a difference between that and saying they're "preferred ".

she only bought her son one but this is her quote from the article

I never implied or suggested they didn't, but apparently traits of athletes matter as well

And these traits can't be obtained anywhere else but sports?

There's really no reason to oppose this at all.

No legit reason at all to be offended by this.

The school is being a dick to people advocating for someone who cannot advocate for himself.
