Because he is exploiting his being gay for fame. The gay community has fought hard to be accepted in society, primarily on the grounds that they are no different that heterosexuals, other than their preference in lovers.
He wanted to make sure he was known as the first gay NFL player (thank goodness he made a camp). That shouldnt be viewed as an accomplishment.
