AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - At least one person was killed and several others injured when a truck hit a beam on a highway bridge under construction above Interstate 35 in central Texas, causing a collapse that rained debris on vehicles, officials said.

The accident took place in Salado, about 50 miles (80 km) north of Austin, on the major highway that runs through the center of the United States from Texas to Minnesota.

At least three of the injuries are serious, said Texas State Trooper Harpin Myers, who also said there had been a fatality.

The highway has been shut in both directions near the accident.

How freak is that?

If you leave 5 seconds earlier or later you're still alive.

Truck shown is a standard 13'6" truck and trailer. Comments said a flatbed truck hit the bridge first.

Question: What project finishes first, the construction on I-35 or the Sagrada Família?

i'm in Temple (just north of the accident) and 35 will never ever ever ever be finished.

ever.

seriously crazy. i was in Tulsa Wednesday for the Tornado and almost had to go from Tulsa to Austin in one day yesterda, but fortunately got to stop in Temple and thought better of messing with all of that. I just told my boss "no."

shite like this or my aunt being killed by a drunk driver can make me spend hours thinking about the numerous variables that all have to happen for someone to meet death like this.

yeah. i drive about 40k miles a year and about 75% of it's on 35 up to dallas or down to Austin/SA. it's nuts to think about how one stop, having to pee, leaving a minute earlier or later and i could have been dead. i've probably passed 20 fatal accidents in the last year.

I grew up about 35 miles north of Salado and my girlfriend lives in Belton, about 10 miles north. She was driving to Austen yesterday and the bridge collapsed about 7-8 minutes after she had driven through Salado. Crazy.

John Oliver just did a good take on the state of our infrastructure and how nothing is really being done about it.

I try not to think about it to much lest I end up like Clyde Bruckman.

but yeah, I mean your wife nagging you about something can kill you or save your life...something that literally takes 5 seconds, catch this light, etc.

the confluence of events is astounding sometimes. Think about governor perry, ran under a tree branch right when it broke and fell on him.

Mopac is a parking lot 80% of the time. With all the construction they are doing night and day, avoid Mopac at all costs

if you want to avoid the decks of death of 35 in Austin - take 130

i think he meant 130.

they could double the toll to get around and i'd still pay it to avoid driving through that craphole.

and as far as traffic is concerned, dripping springs drives me fricking nuts. the passing lane...please cruise at 35 miles an hour
