He didn't have to do anything at all...

Let's say checks were sent out to 200 players.

$200 to 200 players is $40,000.

Again, he didn't have to do anything. He could have given $0 and nobody would have said anything because giving money away to former players is not something people do.

But he gave away $40,000 when he didn't have to.
