I'm spending five days in New Orleans in April. Plan on getting out of the city for a day or two in order to eat at some local places. The focus is seafood, but any type of food will do. Willing to drive with 1.5 hours of New Orleans in any direction.
Hymel's in Convent was recommended to me. Can y'all recommend it or similar places?
TIA

The seafood won't be any better in the rural areas than what you will find in New Orleans. There is different type of Louisiana food west of the Atchafalaya Basin but that is a farther drive...

I thought I read Middendorf's has gone downhill? Plus most people in my party have already been there. Still might hit it up.
Peche will be visited.

You don't need to drive 1.5 hours to get good seafood in the New Orleans area.
But you could drive out to Laplace...they have some places on the water that are somewhat difficult to find but are...ok.

Ok I'll look into Laplace.

Thanks. I was looking at that before. Ton of options.

Houmas House is a great Plantation home with 3 different restaurants serving food all day. That might be a good stop to get out of the city.

You HAVE to come over to Bay St Louis for a day. Drive up old 90 from the base of the high rise, it's a beautiful trip. What and where to eat is another thread, or when I have more time. You won't be disappoint.

Don't know if thesze fit what the OP is looking for, but . . .
Morton's in Madisonville. Not formal but good seafood. Nice setting on the Tchefuncte River.
Peck's in Slidell. Great portions of very good seafood.
Miss my SE LA seafood.

Consider Richard's Seafood Patio. It's on the map.

Yeah those fit. We used to go to Morton's every summer when visiting family. I'm looking for places like Morton's. Thanks.

I wouldn't drive from New Orleans for Spahr's or Hymel's.
I would drive for Middendorf's. Whoever told you it went downhill was wrong. The food/menu hasn't changed. Best fried seafood around.

I'll second the trip to Darrow to visit Houmas House. Fantastic food and the grounds are beautiful. Plenty to see and do there.
