I was looking at getting a boat in the next year or so. Just a small 16-18 ft aluminum boat to mess around with in the bedico/manchac area.

Dad has a 18 or 20 ft, can't remember center console sabre. Its probably 25 years old. It's not ideal for what I want to do, but works well in the lake and delacroix etc.

It has a 115 mariner on it that hasnt ran right for a couple years. He's offered to put a new motor in it and let me use it instead of me buying a boat.

We are beyond rebuilding it, been rebuilt a few times and it's just worn out.

We are not hardcore fishermen, mainly go out to have fun and if fish are caught then awesome. What are the good affordable outboards out now?

Sadly affordable and new outboards don't go together anymore. I would expect to pay $10k + rigging for a new 115 four stroke. You can get a 25 hp hand tiller in the $3k range which should push a light 16' aluminum hull.

I have a very similar boat. I'd find a used 150 motor and slap it on. I did this recently for about $4500 and got a sweet Yamaha 150 with little hours. there are deals, you gotta find em.

Well I don't think it would work to good where I was wanting to go, so probably just lake pontchartrain and over in Slidell, maybe hopedale.

Before getting caught up in which brand is better or cheaper, check with friends about quality of dealers near you. For me having a quality reputable dealers close by would go a long way in deciding which engine to buy.

I or friends have been associated in most major brands. For me it is how you take care of an engine not the name on the cover.
